Feeling sluggish after runs. No energy. Help?

I run in the mornings and spend the rest of the day feeling sluggish, cranky and very fatigued. The days I don't run, I feel just fine. In order to try to prevent it today, I had Gatorade before and after my run, a filling but small breakfast beforehand, and tons of water and a handful of pretzels afterwards. But like clockwork, here I am, noon and feeling sleepy as ever. Any idea why? This is getting pretty old.

Re: Feeling sluggish after runs. No energy. Help?

  • What does your breakfast consist of?
  • A few questions I can think of off the top  of my head:

    1. How many hours of sleep are you getting the nights before running?

    2. What is your current exercise schedule like? Your body may be adjusting to more exercise if this is still early in your regular routine or on the other hand, you may need a break/cut back.

    3. How many miles are you doing a week? I believe there is a general rule of only increasing weekly mileage by 10% and then cutting down to 20% for a week after 3-4 weeks of building it up by 10%.

This is my thought. When I'm increasing my mileage, I'm exhausted within an hour of finishing my run, even if I fuel properly and am plenty hydrated. It's just my body adjusting to a longer distance or recovering from an all-out effort. But, like PP said, if you are increasing your mileage too quickly, it may be a sign of needing to back off a bit.

Today it was a toasted whole wheat english muffin, topped with 1/2 tbs of Nutella and then slices strawberries on top of that. Not too big, not too small.

Usually 7-8. Last night I slept from 11pm-7am, so 8.

Right now I'm doing C25K and I still consider myself a beginner. This was a new week so my mileage has been increased but my running interval was increased only by 1 minute. Do you think that could be the culprit? I don't know what other option I have since I'm only running for 3 minutes, walking for 4 and repeating for 30 minutes.

I only do 8 miles a week. (2 miles per run, 4 days a week). Ok, that's a lot of math for me to handle, lol. But what I'm going is increasing a running minute each week, and decreasing a walking minute the week after. Do you think that's going too fast?

  • Water and pretzels after a run? Try something with protein to refuel you and keep you going through the afternoon. I often need to eat lunch sooner than "normal" on a day when I run early, too.
  • I agree with Kate, I think you need protein.  Maybe even a big glass of low fat chocolate milk would work versus pretzels and water!!

  • I've been doing some Googling and you guys are onto something, I think I need more protein and carbs after my runs. The chocolate milk seems to be quite popular too. I'll be crossing my fingers in hopes this does the trick.

Have any post runs snack ideas?

  • I eat a big breakfast about a half hour to an hour after my run. Two eggs, a glass of milk and a bowl of kashi go lean cereal. I try to eat at least 30 grams of protein after a big workout/run.

Also, your hydration before your run and replacing lost electrolytes after may be making you feel sluggish as well. Keep up your protein thorughout the day as well.

String cheese and some almonds in a pinch; green monster smoothie if I have more time.

  • Others have already chimed in, but lack of protein was what I was thinking too. Increasing your protein should make a world of difference in how you feel!

I like hard boiled eggs, I will boil 5-6 at a time and just to have them around. I like to put them in my tuna too.

Peanut butter and apple slices is another one of my favorite snacks.

  • I would just say to rest after you run.

  • Nutella, strawberries and chocolate milk are not going to be the best for fueling, imo. Good as a geest but not what you want for your daily source of energy. Less sugar and more protein, you might try a protein bar like luna to satisfy your sweet tooth with a little more balance.
