I need some help with a few situations that have been going on for a long time with my supervisor. I work in a hospital in reception/registration. I am part time, but work full time hours ( usually 5-6 days a week). Our department is staffed 24/7 and thus I work several different shifts, no set schedule, no set days off.
The first problem is my supervisor will schedule me 3-11pm one night, then have me coming back at 7am-3pm the next day. I have 2 small kids (2 and 4) and I won't get to see them for 24 hours when this happens. It is also difficult to get enough rest when I am only gone 8 hours between shifts, so it becomes easier to make mistakes, which is of course frowned upon. I have spoken with her several times regarding this situation and nothing changes. There are other shifts the next day I could be scheduled for, as she schedules others for them, so it's not like I am the only one who can work them. I have also spoken to her supervisor with no success. Ideas? ETA we do not get quick-return pay, so there is no financial benefit.
My other problem is my supervisor constantly calls me on my days off/vacation regarding non-urgent matters. I usually get one day off a week and without fail she will call regarding something that can either be easily dealt with the next day or something she could have found out herself reading notes, etc. I have told her to stop calling unless it's urgent, but she continues. I will screen my calls and listen to the voicemails to see what the call is for, but if I don't respond right away she keeps calling. Or she will say it is extremely urgent, when it's not. She did this today regarding a problem from when she was on vacation the past week that I had emailed her about. I even said in the email I would talk to her Friday at work about it, as it is not urgent. She called anyways and said in the voicemail it was extremely urgent, call back. It was not. What can I do other than asking her to stop calling (which I have done) and speaking to her boss about it? She never calls the full time people like this but does call the other part timers and call in/contingent.
Re: Work q's
I spoke to my HR rep today and was told if I am scheduled to return to work in 8 hours or less the company is required to pay me quick-return pay, which is double my pay for the first 4 hours. And that company policy is if someone else is available to work one of those shifts we are not to be scheduled for this due to the pay increase. I asked why I was told we don't get quick-return pay by my supervisor and she said she would look into it and look into the schedules to see what happened/why it wasn't caught sooner. I have worked this no less than 20 times in the past year and a half. (I keep my schedules). So that was frustrating.
She then told me I am not, per my job description and handbook, required to answer calls on my time off. She said she would speak to my boss about this as well.
So, now it's out there for HR to handle. Thanks again.
I had a meeting with my supervisor, her manager and our CFO on Tuesday. My boss' major argument regarding calling on days off was "well, I get called on my days off, so what's the problem?" I said that she is our boss, she is in charge of our department so of course she should be informed of problems. I also reminded her she does not answer her phone most of the time, but will then call us on our day off to discuss it. It was decided that unless the situation is an emergency (which is nearly impossible in our department) no calls to the employees. We are to document every call from now on (department-wide).
For the scheduling aspect I brought all of my schedules for the past year to show the shifts where we have been scheduled to return in 8 hours or less. Our CFO looked at them and askedmy boss why we were being scheduled this way. Her response was that she didn't realize she was doing it. I had also printed email exchanges asking her to please not do this and asking if she could switch shifts (she said no I had to find someone to switch with me on my own. According to my schedules I have been scheduled this way 21 shifts in 17 months. Our CFO told my boss she needs to stop doing this unless the employee gives written consent. He verified what HR said about quick return pay. He then said he will see if he can get me back pay for those shifts, since it was earned but not submitted by my boss.
The meeting ended with the CFO telling me to cc him on future exchanges between my boss and her manager. The manager didn't say much, besides saying she didn't realize the situations were not handled a she had been told they were.
My boss and I met yesterday and she apologized for what has been going on saying she didn't know how upset I have been regarding these issues. Which is funny, since I have brought them up numerous times and have the documentation to prove it.
So, good outcome.
