I can't shake thoughts of the "M" word

Please tell me all of the reasons that running a marathon is crazy.

I've done 2 halfs, a couple of 10 milers, and a bunch of shorter races.  I have never run more than 14 miles.  I told myself over and over during the last few miles of my first half "I will never do the full, I will never do the full."

Yet here I sit researching marathons in my area and marathon training programs.

I'd do it with a friend, who mentioned the idea recently and planted the seed. And it's always been a sort of bucket list thought of mine...

Halp?

Re: I can't shake thoughts of the "M" word

  • If it was truly THAT crazy, there wouldn't be so many people running them year after year--in increasing numbers.

It's a serious undertaking for sure. But crazy? I've heard of stupider things. ;)

    Signed,

A two-time marathoner with a third in the works. Stick out tongue

  • I always thought so, too.  Now I'm running one in five weeks.

  • I said that same exact thing for three years, during several half marathons, 10 milers, and lots of shorter ones.

Then I registered for and ran Chicago last October.

It was my first, but DEFINITELY not my last, 26.2!

(In other words... if you want to hear why you SHOULDN'T do it, I'm not going to help you!)

  • I'm another who always said no freaking way.

I've done two so far and am planning my 3rd for later this yearWink

It is a big commitment, but there is nothing quite like crossing that finish line, especially for the first one.

  • If running a marathon is crazy, then I am crazy 4 times over. And darn proud of it too! I literally decided to sign up for marathon #5 on crossing the finish line of marathon #4.

Training with someone else, especially for your first, is really helpful. Train smart and do the work and you will make it 26.2 miles.

  • Thanks ladies.  I still haven't committed, and the race wouldn't be until the end of the year, but the excitement is already starting to grow...

I have 11 on the calendar for tomorrow (last long run before another 10 mile race in a couple of weeks).  I guess I'll see if it still sounds appealing at the end of that.  :-)
