  whats your idea of affordable?

  Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  Good point! I've done so well with priceline that I haven't really paid more than $100-$200 for a 4 star/resort.  I'd like to keep it below $200 per night per room since we are treating my parents this whole trip.  The cheaper, the better of course.  My parents think that a fancy hotel is a waste of money anyways so we're all about the location.

  I think you should pick where you want to stay and then find a hotel. There are over 100 hotels in Manhattan alone.

  I also think you'll need to bump your price -- $250 should get you a nice hotel. I'd be a little leery of a hotel under $150. We're doing one night in a hotel for a wedding and it is over $300.

  We're locals buts have stayed at the Doubletree on stone street in the financial district for under $200 a night,it was mid August I believe and it was super tiny but really new/clean and had great service

  My husband and I have stayed the past three times at Park Central.  Right on 7th and 57th.  Great location.  Well appointed rooms, has a good restaurant and bar.  We never paid more than $200 a night, usually deals around $150-$160.

  Z hotel in Long Island City, Queens was offering phenomenally low prices last fall because they had just opened and were trying to get business. I don't know if that is still the case. Friends of ours stayed there and I saw their room. They had spectacular views of Manhattan and the Queensboro bridge, a beautiful roof-top terrace with a nice bar and the hotel offered a free shuttle into midtown Manhattan. There was also a subway stop closeby and Long Island City is the first stop in Queens when you come from Manhattan. They were much closer to things like the MoMa, Central Park, Rockefeller Center, Bloomingdale's, etc. than they would have been in lower Manhattan.

  We booked a room at the Intercontinental Barclay Hotel (4 stars) at the end of May for $175/night.  It's at 48th and Lex, which I am pretty happy with.  We booked it through Priceline by naming our own price, so I don't know if that could work for you or not.
