scary turned funny story (long)

So my dog Naismith (a 5 year old mini australian shepherd) has been humping his pillow ("girlfriend") quite a bit the past couple of weeks.  I haven't really thought much of it.

Sunday night Rusty was out back mowing, Parker and I were in his bathroom in the tub, and Naismith was having fun with his girlfriend.  After the bath was over Parker and I walked into my bedroom and Naismith was laying on his side panting like crazy with his back leg bent and shacking.  I didn't think much of it because he has had knee surgery and it still give his problems.  I looked closer and noticed that his penis was out further than I have ever seen before (like 7 inches).  There were also several sores on the end of it.  I ran outside to get Rusty and he comes in and starts cracking up.  We try to calm him down, but it won' go back in.  After 15 minutes I decide to call the vet.  Meanwhile, Parker is pointing at Naismith saying "uh-oh" over and over.

The vet said that we needed to take him in ASAP.  Rusty scooped him up and Parker started screaming for "Nai-mith" and daddy.  He was scared and knew something was wrong.  The vet told me on the phone that it can be like a rubber band on your finger.  It can cut of circulation and eventually fall off.

Rusty called me after he saw the vet and by the time the vet got in the room it has gone back in 1/2 way.  The vet gave him a shot for the pain and inflamation, but he said that his hair had got caught and was not allowing his penis to retract back.  The vet said that once he calms down we needto just trim his penis and "taint" hairs.  I have never heard of this before and neither has anyone I know.  I couldn't stop laughing when they got home and we had to give him a haircut.  Naismith kept humping because he was trying to get it to go back in and he couldn't figure out how.  And the sores were from him licking it.

Moral of the story - If you dog is humping a lot make sure their hair is trimmed!

  • This is too funny!! Who would even think to 'trim' that on their dog? I'm glad he is feeling better, but the image of Parker standing and pointing at your dog saying 'uhoh' makes me giggle every time I think about it.
