XP: Need new carry-on bag

My previous carry-on bag was a Target find years ago and it's finally falling apart. I would like something that can be used as my only bag for weekend trips or in conjunction with a larger checked bag for longer trips. Must have pockets, fit the essentials, hold my 13" laptop, be light enough for me to carry, and meet the requirements for carry-ons (20-22").

Any recommendations?

  • Have you checked out Marshall's or TJMaxx? They usually have some great luggage options. I'm a fan of American Tourister--which I believe they also sell at Target.
  • Ditto TJ Maxx.

Check out their selection and pick what you like (mini roller suitcase, backpack, fancy shoulder bag, etc.).

  • I have a Camelbak day pack that I always carry.  It can fit my 13" Macbook with plenty of room for a couple of days worth of clothes and other things.  Camelbaks tend to be pricey, but I've had mine for 5+ years, traveled heavily with it and pretty much beat the crap out of it and it's still in great shape.

  • I am in love with my North Face Overhaul 40 backpack.  It was expensive, but worth it for me since my job is 75%-100% travel.  It holds up to a 17 inch laptop, fits under the seat in front of me if I don't expand the expandable bits (carry-on sized either way), has enough room for a 4 day business trip if I expand the expandable bits, an adequate selection of exterior pockets, and best of all it is ergonomic enough to wear fully loaded on a 2 mile walk from work to my hotel without looking like I expected to be in wilderness.
