Are all SPF (brands) the same?

DH hates putting on lotions so I'm looking to get a spray SPF for our upcoming vacation. We already have spf45 (spray) and spf30 (lotion, which is fine for me).

I know there are so many brands (Banana Boat, Hawaiian Tropic, Coppertone, store brands- Kroger, Target, etc). If they are all a certain SPF and a spray, does the quality of product differ between brands?

I prefer sprays that don't leave my skin greasy (like most lotions do) so it doesn't leave marks on my shorts/shirts/beach coverups.

Any help (or recommendations you have) are appreciated!

eta: This is for body only (I have a facial spf lotion that I already love)

Re: Are all SPF (brands) the same?

  • Yes, but it isn't as simple as you're making it out to be.  There are a ton of types of sunscreen out there, and some types work better than others.

It tends to be very hard to apply enough spray to be effective, so I much prefer lotion.  Sheer touch lotions aren't as greasy as other formulas.

Neutrogena is a very well-respected brand.

Thanks V- I know they make this for the face (sheer touch), but do they have one for the body?

  • I like the Neutrogena ones as well. I use lotion before I go outside and then touch up with sprays. The Neutrogena Sport for Face is one of H's favorites because it doesn't get in his eyes when he sweats. I like the ultra-sheer stuff for spray and lotion for my body.

  • ditto neutrogena. I think the lotions also work better, but I have that and sprays. I like clinique city block lotion for my face, but it is a little greasy...it doesn't cause break outs which is good

All other sunblocks (including Neutrogena oil-free ultra sheer) made my face so greasy. I have heard great things about Shiseido's SPF and will be purchasing this for vacation (for extended outdoor wear).

I used the one you have on the bottom. I burn like crazy and this worked for me. Just with any other lotions, you have to re-apply. I didn't burn and that says a lot! Thanks for reminding me about this by the way, I need to get some for my upcoming vacation!

  • Another plus about the Neutrogena ultra-sheer is that the lotion comes in a 3 oz size and I always have that in my carry-on when I travel to places where I'll be in the sun.

What spf do you use? Does it make your face oily?

I don't use this on my face; I use it on my body. On my face and ears, I wear Jane Iredale mineral foundation.

Yes, Neutrogena does.  Hawaiian Tropic also has a sheer touch sunscreen for body that I like a lot.  I maybe like it more because it comes in a much bigger bottle and it is easier to get a lot out of the bottle, which makes it easier to apply the large amount you need to cover your body (each application should be a shot glass full).

  • I'm allergic to PABA, which is in some sunscreens, like Coppertone. So no matter what, I try to avoid brands that have PABA. I usually use banana boat for body and then clinique or neutrogena on face.
