Cruise: Has anyone left from New Orleans port?

We are thinking of taking a cruise leaving from New Orleans. We would fly into NOLA (MSY), spend a few days in the French Quarter, and then from there go to the cruise port.

1. What hotels would you recommend in the French Quarter, and where is best pricing for it?

2. How should we get from MSY to French Quarter? Cab it- if so, how much?

3. Is the cruise port close from the French Quarter? I'm assuming cabbing it is the best option (and how much would this cost)?

Re: Cruise: Has anyone left from New Orleans port?

  • I can't answer the 3rd because I've never gone on a cruise from New Orleans, but we've had really good luck with Priceline for New Orleans.  We usually end up with the Marriott in the French Quarter for well under $100 a night.  For that price, I love the hotel.  It's right on Canal St., is walking distance to Bourbon and is really a great location.  I've always been happy with Priceline in any city as long as I stick with four star hotels.

Definitely take a cab from the airport to the French Quarter.  I can't remember exactly how much it was - maybe $30?  Really, I'm just guessing and I don't know.  It wasn't crazy, though.  Plus,  if you plan to just hang out in the French Quarter, you really don't need a car and will probably spend more on parking than it's worth.

  • 1)  Royal Sonesta,  Hotel Montelone, Omni, Ritz.

    2) Taxis are $30-33 (I think they just went up) for 2 people.  The airport shuttle is cheaper, but takes much longer because of all the other stops.  I pay for convenience. You might not mind.

    3)  It's about 2 miles from the FQ to the cruise ship dock.  It should cost $10-15 dollars.

    1. We always stay at the Hotel Monteleone, love it and book right through their website.

    2. We took a cab but honestly I don't remember the price so it must've not been out of line.

    3.  The cruise port is right there.  We have cruised from there one time and it was so easy.  This is when we were living in Atlanta though so we drove to the port after leaving the hotel, I remember it was a two minute drive practically so a cab would be perfect.  Who knows, maybe being so close to the port the hotel would provide a shuttle?
