Re: Hey gardening ladies

  • dig a shallow hole next to your basil. Put a small bowl full of beer and that should do the trick.

Also,. I encourage my boys to pick slugs up and throw them down the sewer drain. Might you convince your kids to do the same?

  • Pete is already giddy with the idea of picking off slugs, except he wants to keep a couple as pets. Children are so gross. LOL

My basil is in a container so I guess I have to find smaller containers to put the beer in. I wonder if soda bottle caps will be big enough or if I should find something else. The herb pots are pretty small.

I think I have some glass tea light containers.

  • Don't lady bugs eat slugs? Or am I thinking of the wrong pest? I buy little ziploc bags of them at the garden store.

  • Nevermind it's aphids, not slugs!

Use the tea light containers. We bought PBR and used the cans cut off at the top last year to kill the slugs. It helped a lot. Nestle it into the ground so that the top is at ground level.

You can also buy copper wire and surround the planter with it. They won't cross it.

Also, my kid keeps pillbugs as pets. True story. She makes up stories about their lives. It is absolutely ridiculous. LOL.

  • Please don't use Sevin; it kills bees.

You can buy a bag of diatomaceois earth and sprinkle it around areas you don't want slugs .  The  powder cuts the slugs (and it also keeps other things out, like ants) and they avoid it.

  • Beer is the only thing that has worked for me. I used about a 3-4oz tupperware container.
  • Beer and Diatomaceous have worked for me.  The best thing is just to find them and kill them.  Slugs are so gross, ugh.

Sluggo weekly.  Safe for pets and wildlife.  Beer doesn't do anything in my yard.  Salt is OK for dropping them in as you hand pick, but you shouldn't salt the ground.

  • Can I make this a gardeners dilemma feedback post? We don't have slugs but last year had horrible ants and moles. We tried everything. The cats eventually killed off some of the miles but we never could get the ants under control. I need ideas please. We're goig I be transferring our greenhouse to the ground soon

  • My husband will love the beer idea. I just hope he doesn't drink it instead.

Our gardening/landscape invader this year: leaf miners. Our boxwoods are infested and apparently there is nothing to be done at this point. For days I swore I could hear rustling in the bushes. It was revolting to figure out what was causing it. :-(

you need to kill the grubs in your yard and that will get rid of the moles.

Not sure about the ants. I don't like chemicals but I treat our yard for fire ants once a month.

Earthworms are moles' favorite food, not grubs.

You can buy earthworm flavored poison at lawn and garden shops.  It's pricey, but they guarantee results.

Do cats find these things tasty?

  • Sluggo for slugs. Delta dust for ants.
  • Read that corn meal kills ants so I'm trying that this year for inside the house - might sprinkle a pile outside if I see a colony. Dunno if it works as well on the huge ants we have as it does on the small ants in the you tube videos.

We seem to have moles so I'm doing the chewing gum idea first. They are under the deck so I can't really get at them we do have tons of worms in our yard. Thanks for the tip on the earth worm poison.

  • Also you can crush up some eggshells and put it around your plant for the slugs. They don't like to crawl over it.
