in other "bump is stupid" news

I was responding to the vaccine thread, and I noticed there was a "gender" chart.  WTH is that, you ask?

http://content.thebump.com/sitelets/chinese-gender-chart/

It's stupid is what it is.  Also, do they say gender b/c they're stupid, or is sex too much for our delicate little ears?

Re: in other "bump is stupid" news

  • The Chinese Gender Chart is pretty old and not just on TB.  Here's a link to the history of it http://www.chinesegenderchart.info/pregnancy-chart-gender-selection/history.html

It's obviously not accurate, if it were PJ would be a girl.

It's good to put correct information out there, but I wouldn't assume people who don't know the difference are dumb (and I know you didn't say that). I don't remember learning the difference in school, just through exposure to the world and issues of gender identity. If I'd grown up somewhere more progressive, I'm sure I'd have learned the difference sooner. I'd have no problem with this being taught in HS. I think I first understood all of this my sophomore year of college in a psych class.

Yeah the first time I remember learning about the difference between sex and gender was in psych and women's studies classes in college.

My issue is when someone calls it "gender" and they are politely told that in fact, it's "sex" and not gender that they are talking about, that they get all self righteous and indignant and want to argue about it.  Just makes them look stupid, IMO.

I think that's actually true for a lot of people, from what I've seen. That doesn't bother me. What does bother me though, as PP said, is when people are corrected and then get way defensive and continue to use it incorrectly anyway. That's just weird.

The sex v gender posts will make your eyes bleed though. Stay away from them to save your sanity.

  • I think the chart is kind of fun- I liked doing some of the silly things like this when I was pregnant (especially since I didn't find out the sex with either kid).  Oddly enough, this chart was right for both kids.

  • I can't believe I ever spent as much time over there as I did.

As for the chart, if it were correct, I would have two boys and a girl and there's only one male in this house.

See, at least you learned, though. The usual reply is, "whatever, everyone knows what I mean. Why are you such a biitch about it?" As if the two separate words don't exist for a reason. Words: they haz a meaning.

ETA: I've seen that chart. I'm hoping it's just for fun. It predicted my sex and my brother's sex correctly, apparently. (Through my calculations - AFAIK, my mom has never heard of it and didn't predict the sex of either of her children.)

  • Oh the bump is stupid that's for sure. But the Chinese gender chart is not an example of its stupidity. I also don't think it's stupid when people say "we're finding out the gender." I actually think it's stupid when people pick fights over sex vs. gender.
  • Okay I take some of that back; the stupid thing about the bumps chart is that I don't think it takes into account that you need to use your Chinese lunar year of birth/conception.

I agree. I don't get why people care SO much about sex vs gender.

Chinese chart was wrong for me both times, even the "right" one that uses the lunar calendar.

  • That chart says I'm male.  Either it's wrong, or my parents have some 'splaining to do.
  • I've heard that you have to calculate your age according to the chinese calendar, not our Gregorian calendar. Which makes sense since it's the "chinese" gender predictor.
A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.
  • The chinese gender chart was right for DD! But yeah, that thing has been around for years.

  • I had to walk away from the bump today after reading this post:

    http://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/64754303.aspx

chick's mom tells her "your dad wasn't allowed in the delivery room since he didn't attend the lamaze class with me", chick gets worried her dh can't attend delivery of their child and calls the hospital on a Saturday hoping to get answers.

I mean, the eff?  common sense?  no?  ::headdesk::

I agree. I remember a discussion here regarding a bump C&P of whiny gender disappointment posts, in which someone made some homophobic comments that offended many (me included) That was hotly discussed here until somehow it devolved into a sex vs. gender discussion. Personally I was annoyed that the post got WAY off topic.

Shortly later someone posted an article about gender reveal parties. After many replies with the g-word, I TIC asked "Shouldn't we call them 'sex reveal parties?' ". Someone who obviously missed the above-described post thought I was serious and wagged her finger at me for being too politically correct. LOL

My issue is that the difference between sex and gender IS a big deal to people whose sex doesn't match the "usual" gender that accompanies it. In that case, the difference between the two is a huge part of their life. And that, to me, is why people should know the difference. Not some argument over semantics. But because not knowing might mean not understand the trans community. Who, I'm sure, does wish there was a way to test for gender. Smile It might shut a lot of people up.
