Germany

H and I are doing a mini roadtrip in Germany: Cologne, Hanover, Hamburg, and Berlin to be more specific. Probably one day each in Hamburg and Cologne and the rest of our 10 day trip in Berlin and Hanover (we are visiting a friend in Hanover). Any recommendations on what to see, do, eat, drink, etc? I've never been to Germany, so I'm pretty much open to any suggestions!

Re: Germany

  • There is a really good Mexican place in Berlin called Dolores you should try if you?ve got a craving. I liked walking through the Hackeschen H?fe and there are also some great restaurants, too. You should take a stroll down the Kuhdamm (fabulous shopping/window shopping) and definitely stop in KaDeWe (the German version of Harrod?s). The Reichstag is also a fun, free thing to do. Sometimes there is a line to go up in the dome, but it?s worth the wait--the view is quite nice.

Yeah the KaDeWe is cool. The museum island is fantastic. I can't remember the name of the one we went to but it had the giant Egyptian steps. The DDR museum was fun for us. We checked out the Science and Technology Museum which was great and I'm still peeved that DH dragged me along to much in the boat section and I missed nearly all of the plane section because they closed. :( I loved Berlin. The Fat Tire bike tour is really great too. Great way to get a quick and informational tour of the city. The Holocaust memorial and museum in Berlin is wonderfully created too.

That's the Pergamon. They also have the Babylonian gates, which are very impressive, I thought. I'm not much of a statue-and-coin-museum person, so the Babylonian gates were about the only things that really interested me there, but they were worth it.

Also, if you're going to Berlin, then the Wall Museum is of course a must-see. Things in Berlin are very far apart (when the city was split it grew in separate directions and once it joined a new center sprung up in the middle- Potsdamer Platz), so make sure you get a 2 or 3-day city transportation ticket. The price is reasonable and it's definitely worth it. When I lived there I had several visitors take an English bike tour (again, it's too spread out for walking) and they all really enjoyed it. I think the meeting place for that was Alexanderplatz, but if you look into it online beforehand I'm sure you can find the information. It's "free" with a recommended tip of 17?, and they loan you the bike (and I think a helmet if you want).

If you're into Holocaust history, then under the Monument to the Murdered Jews of Europe (between Potsdamer Platz and the Brandenburg Gate - looks kind of like a bunch of different-sized dominos) there's a really good, heart-wrenching multimedia museum.

And glitterfart - um, what??? A good Mexican place in Berlin?!? I lived there for a year and never discovered it. Where is it?

It?s on the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stra?e near Alexanderplatz, but I?ve never been. However, all my friends who have gone swear by it.

I lived in Berlin for a year, too. In 2000/2001 in Lichtenberg! Fabulous...how bout you?

The place of my maiden name. ;)

Kelly. It's Fat Tire bike tours than runs at Alexanderplatz. Under the TV tower. It's more expensive 25-30 euros now. But well worth it. You get to see a ton! The transit pass is worth it too. The city is truly really spread out.
