Cabo San Lucas vs. P*nta Cana

DH & I are starting to research a trip for our 1 year anniversary which is coming up in May (I know, we should have had this booked already).

I think we have it narrowed down to P*nta Cana or Cabo San Lucas. Neither one of us have been to either of these locations, however, we have traveled to alot of placed throughout the Caribbean and absolutely love it.

We HM'd at Secrets Maroma Beach in Riviera Maya Mexico and were totally spoiled. We are looking for a resort just as wonderful as that one.

In the DR, I know the ocean will be clear blue with beautiful white sand. Pictures that I have seen of Cabo, the sand is darker and you dont get the clear water from the Pacific Ocean.

I am just trying to reach out and see if anyone here has been to one or both places and might be able to provide some insight or recommendations, likes/dislikes, etc.

TIA!

Re: Cabo San Lucas vs. P*nta Cana

  • ive been to PC and the water and swimming and beaches were gorgeous and it was a lovely relaxing time-there's not much at all outside of the resort. on that trip i really didnt' care. i was there for frosty drinks, a beach chair and relaxation.

maybe i'm wrong but i dont think that there are good beaches in cabo either. or swimming. someone who's been can confirm or not but i think i remember reading that.

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • Cabo has swimmable beaches but only if you stay on the main beach, "El medano". The rip tide is very strong around Baja and only resorts that sit on this beach offer swimming in front of them. The "swimmable" areas move every day with the tide and are marked off by life guards. The main beach is public though with lots of bars and restaurants on it. We have a timeshare in Cabo and love spending time there. Our timeshare is on the main beach and close to bars and restaurants and things to do.  To me, Cabo isn't really the place you go to and never leave the resort. There are too many really good restaurants to be had downtown and some great atmosphere and nightlife.

  • We went to Punta Cana last year and are going to Cabo this May.  The DR was pretty, water/beach was nice.  It was a lot windier there that I remember Mexico or Jamaica being. We did not venture out from our resort and we were there for a week.

I've heard you cannot swim at the beach in Cabo, but there are the arches that have a swimming area around.  I also feel like there are more things to do in the towns surrounding CAbo, just from what I've heard.

I honestly don't think you could go wrong with either location.  I'm actually excited to Cabo since we'll be able to see some pretty sunsets.

  • We've been to Secrets Maroma Beach and also honeymooned at Excellence Punta Cana. I have nothing but great things to say about Excellence - we loved our time there and have recommended it to many people. I would say our experiences with SMB and EPC were very similar in terms of resort, service, activities and beach. We enjoyed both.

This is also true. Punta Cana is very much a "relax and enjoy your resort" sort of destination.

  • DH and I have been to both, and we liked Cabo better.  Both were nice, but I liked the Cabo weather.  Every day was 80, no humidity without a cloud in the sky. Punta Cana was more humid and one day it rained most of the day. We stayed at the RIU Palace Cabo and would highly recommend. It was right on the beach, you can lay on the beach and go wading but not swimming because the waves are too strong.
  • P.S. GO BLUE! ;)
  • If you choose Punta Cana, are you going to actually say the name, or will you censor yourself then too? Confused
  • We've been to Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Maya, Jamaica and PC and my preference order is PC on down. I didn't think we'd top Jamaica but we loved PC. It was relaxing, the people were great and the weather was fantastic. Full disclosure: I'm not a fan of Mexico so my opinion might be a little biased. However, if I did give it a (third) chance it would be to Cabo.

Thank you. I've been wondering if this was a Nest or an individual censor.
(PS - OP, "punta" is "point".)

You can't say Punta on The Knot - you have to censor it like this.  I'm sure anyone migrating over from there thought the same would be true of The Nest.  Relax.

Now that's just silly.  Punta?  Really?  What will the Knot Gods come up with next?

I'm sorry. I didn't know that. Apologies to OP.

It certainly won't be an IT department that is good at fixing glitches.

I know GoBucks - she's good people and definitely was compensating for The Knot's weird censoring rules.

It's odd that they don't have the same rules here and there... Oh well!

  • We just got back from cabo last month. It is true that the water and beaches are not as nice as the Caribbean,  but I love that the weather is dependable (warm, sunny, low humidity) most of the year. And it is a quick direct flight for us, which is nice.

We stayed at the pueblo bonito Pacifica and would highly recommend it.

Good to hear!  That is where we are staying in May!
