I've been in my current position for about 3.5y. I worked full time for about 2y and went part-time for personal reasons. I intended to go back to work f/t but in the economy it has been hard. I have been searching for f/t work for several months and have strongly consider a field change. My boss is aware that I have been looking for f/t and a possible career change and has even given me advice and tried to put me in touch with other people who could help, since he could not offer f/t. I heard today that I'll be offered f/t again. I don't particularly care for the project I am currently working on and feel confident that with my experience I could earn more somewhere else. My dilemma is, I really want to accept it because it is f/t employment; however, I wouldn't want to stop looking and miss an opportunity for maybe more money, a shorter commute or a new field. Would it be appropriate to request an increase in my hourly rate at this time? I would feel terrible if I accepted this and in a short time got a better opportunity. I don't know how likely that is to happen, but you never know.

You don't say how long you've been looking for FT work and not finding it...don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Consider what it would take to keep you there long term and ask for it before accepting. The worst case is that they can't give it to you and you take what they can give and you know and they know that it's only a matter of time. The best case is that they give it to you and you decide to stay. If they give you the right amount, give them a committment of time so they know they're not wasting their money. Knowing what they know, however, I'm surprised they're not putting you under a contract. Good luck!
