Packing...

When did/do you have most of the house packed up?  We are 2 weeks out (!!) and close April 17...everything we don't use is in boxes in the garage, but there is still a TON of stuff.

Re: Packing...

  • We're moving this Friday and we still have so much left to pack.  I think there will be a LOT of last minute packing just to take care of all the stuff we need to "live".

  • We just moved last month.  We started packing a month out and on the weekends would take 1-2 hours a day (Sat/Sun) and pack up stuff we didn't need in the next month (board games, holiday decorations, etc).  Then with 1 week left we'd pack 1-2 hours a night. I took the day off the day before we moved and my parents came and we all packed most of that day and cleaned out the old place as we packed.

There is always all that last minute stuff that takes much longer than you think it will take. Make sure you have extra boxes/bags to throw all that last minute stuff in.

  • We finished packing at 3 am and the movers came at 9.  I don't advise it.  We packed our place in a week.

  • We just moved.  This is what we did.

2 weeks out:  lots of stuff packed.  Books, games, much of the kitchen stuff, lots of clothes, most of kids toys, etc.

1 day out:  everything else except paper plates, camping pads and sleeping bags, 1 pot to make mac and cheese, 1 box of tools, cleaning supplies.

Last week, our stuff was gone and we lived in the camping mats, ate of paper plates, and finished fixing/cleaning/etc.  It was well worth having our stuff packed and gone the last week so that we could finish the work without tripping over boxes.  We didn;t have a ton of time to cook anyway!

Ditto on the last minute part!

On big packing day, at about 10pm I crashed.  DH got really pissed at me.  What can I say with the move, the kids had both been waking 3-5 times a night.  I was so exhausted.

Anyway, while the movers started moving out the bigger stuff and the boxes we had finished, I did the rest of the packing.  Not ideal, but it worked out ok.  I also had a lot of friends who helped me with packing and cleaning.

  • I try to get started about a month out with stuff I don't need like books, photos, games, closets, etc.  The week of the move is dedicated to serious packing and cleaning.

  • LOL. We never finished packing. The movers were throwing things in random boxes. We had to move the last odds and ends in trash bags. This is definitely not advisable.
  • We moved on our own and we were completely packed (except for necessities) about a week before we were supposed to close. Our closing got delayed for another week so we were pretty much sitting around for 2-3 weeks with everything packed up.

We started to load the boxes into our garage about a week before closing so it'd be easier to load everything into the trailer once the moving day came. I'm SO glad we did that.

FI complained that we were packing way too early, but I like that we saved a ton of time at the end.
