Fingers swelling

Aggh! This is so frustrating! After every run, my fingers swell up sometimes so much that it hurts! I don't clench my fists while I'm running, but as soon as I am walking my cool-down they swell up. I lift them over my head and it starts to help, but people probably think I'm crazy, I try to play it off like I'm stretching. Any other tips??

Re: Fingers swelling

  • When my fingers swell up it's usually a sign of electrolyte imbalance. What do you do for electrolyte replacement during/after your runs?

  • ditto the others.  water+electolytes.  swollen fingers+water and electrolytes stat for  me .
  • Salt and electrolytes after or more in general? I had no idea that's what it was from.

  • Before, during and after! Add salt to home cooked meals. Use an electrolyte replacement drink during your run or if it's very hot you can take salt tabs or just a small packet of salt and lick it and there ya go! It may take some experimenting but it should be better for you!
  • Adding salt during my runs has made a huge difference for me. I was occasionally having runs that felt really hard, my fingers would swell, I would feel like I was in a fog. I started picking up those tiny salt packets from take out places and keeping them in my spi belt. I made it through my last 10 mile run with just water and salt, no other fuel, and still felt great. I can tell when my legs start feeling heavy, my fingers seem tight, that it's time for a little salt. Experiment and you might find it really helps.

  • This happens to me when I hike or backpack. I hadn't thought of salt/electrolytes.  Good to know.

  • I be always wondered what this was from! I get it while running and feel like I have to put my hands up to run lol but always feel like an idiot. Good to know

  • This happens to me after any exercise where I sweat a lot so I put a packet of electrolytes in my water bottle (I get them at Whole Foods) or make the yogi-rita (cheesey name I know but it works, especially for those hot yoga classes).
