Alright party planners...help me!

In an effort to get this board moving...let's plan my wedding!!

We've decided to do the food ourselves, with a lot of effort from our families as well. Since the ceremony will be on Friday, we can focus 100% on Saturday on getting the party ready.

I have no idea what kind of food to do. Do we roast a pig and do BBQ sides? Do we have a variety of stations? (Tacos, 'comfort' foods, pasta, etc). Do we do all kinds of 'heavy' appetizers since people will likely be grazing all evening?

I'm totally picturing a rustic/country type of presentation. Large galvenized tubs filled with ice for drinks. Those big glass drink dispenses w/ cucumbers and lemons sliced in the water (green and yellow are our colors). Rolls of silverware tied with twine or raffia. Even though it's a completely laid back and casual party, I still want it to be presently nicely.

Put on your thinking caps ladies....annnnnnd GO!

Yes, that's the new date. All of our families know and are on board. T minus 5.5 months!

  • Given what you are envisioning, i'd do a bbq.

Ribs, pulled pork, pig roast, cornbread, green beans, etc.

I had a nice idea, and then I lost it when I started thinking about food.

  • I may still have raffia leftover I think. If i can find it, I'll send it to you!
  • I was at a pig roast wedding last summer and it was a huge hit.  Very laid back in their backyard, although they did have a tent and a wooden dance floor.  The sides were made by family members.

When we got there they had appetizer type stuff out (chips and salsa/dips...I'm drawing a blank).  Then when the pig was ready they brought out the rest of the sides - potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, kielbasa etc.

My only suggestion is to make sure you have enough.  I think they underestimated a little and didn't really have enough.

They also did kegs and galvanized buckets of other drinks (soda, water etc).

They had a bonfire ready to light out back too.  Pat was especially interested in that and it was fun hanging out around it late night.

  • If you have it go into the night, the bonfire with smores.... Yumm!

Also, you could have several different backyard games for people (I'm hesitant to suggest horseshoes because I see that getting dangerous w/alcohol!).

  • I think BBQ-eque would be the simplest. Just a couple meats (pig/ribs & chicken) then a bunch of sides. You could probably rent those large, stainless catering "chafers" to put everything in so it looks elegant and uniform.

Appetizers would be good if the meat wasn't being served right away.

  • I agree with all the ladies on the BBQ foods, with a nice presentation to make it a little more elegant. Are you doing a cake/dessert? I love the ideas so far!

  • You ladies are right on track...we're already planning on having a bonfire and yard games (ladder ball, corn hole, horseshoes, etc.)

Now I need to start researching recipes and finding the 'perfect' ones for the sides!

I agree with everything that has been posted already. With how you describe it, I think a pig roast with BBQ sides would be perfect. You can always have some apps out all night, like Jaime said chips & dips, cheese, breads, etc. Easy stuff for people to nibble on. Also, with a bonfire, s'mores are a must!

This sounds like so much fun!

  • Check to see if FF's fire department, or a local fire department, would be willing to do a chicken bbq for you.

    Otherwise, do a pig roast.

    Sides could be:
    Macaroni & Cheese
    Scalloped potatoes
    Creamy cole slaw
    Macaroni salad
    Potato salad
    Pasta salad
    Broccoli salad
    Taco salad
    Fruit salad

     Good apps could be:
    Pizza rolls
    Chips and salsa
    Hummus and pita bread
    Sweet and Sour meatballs
    Cheese and cracker tray

I love the idea of galvanized tubs filled with ice and soda cans, and then another filled with ice and adult beverages.  You could do chalk board paint on them and mark one with "Soda" and the other one "Adult only"

  • I love the BBQ idea!! So fun and so "you and FF". As for side ideas, I think corn on the cob, beans and various salads would work. I would definitely make sure the potato and macroni salads are kept chilled.

Will there be kids there (besides Brody?) if so, a kid's table might be an idea. You can do that on the cheap too. When back to school comes around, stock up on crayons, pens, pencils, paper or get butcher paper!

I now want some ribs with beans and garlic bread...sigh and it only 8:20 am here.

  • Another vote for the backyard BBQ! Do you have a good local BBQ joint that does catering? Some friends of mine did this for their AHR after a small parents only destination beach wedding (2nd wedding for both) and they had a similar styled party. Big galvanized buckets of beer and pop, games, and they had a local BBQ place bring in the food. You could supplement sides on your own but I bet the meat would be better from a restaurant.

  • ooh, and you could do A+C's home made BBQ sauce as favors! there are tons of great recipes out there and you could jar some up in pretty little glass jars and make labels...it would be so cute :-)

I like the idea of big glass things of lemonade and iced tea plus the galvanized tubs.

For dessert you could do an ice cream sundae station or watermelon (seed spitting contest) or s'mores (we had these at my wedding in the fire pit post-reception. SO fun. Or you could do hoodsie cups or something fun and picnic-y like that. Love it!

  • I just found this on saveoncrafts.com and immediately thought, "How cute for serving dips on the appetizer table!" I'm officially in full-frenzy wedding planning!

  • I love the idea of the pig roast.  My sister usually holds an annual pig roast and we have sides like homemade baked mac and cheese, pasta salad with pepperoni, cheese and black olives mixed in, baked beans, potato salad, things like that.

Are  you going to use mason jars for drinks?  Even if just for Lemonade and Iced tea.  I don't know why but I love the whole idea of drinking out of mason jars.

How about medium or small sized galvanized pails for centerpieces with yellow and green wild flowers.  I have a picture of the kinds of flowers I am thinking of in my head, but don't know what they are called. Maybe you can even find ribbon that is green and yellow to tie around the pail and make a cute bow.
