Milwaukee/Madison/Chicago/Minneapolis in May
We're planning to be in Madison in early May and I'm wondering if there are any food/wine or beer/music festivals going on in MN, WI, or Chicago during that time that we should check out. We'll have a few extra days so we'll be looking for something fun to do.

Mr. Sammy Dog
Madison doesn't usually have festivals. There are some events downtown frequently, but they are usually in July (concerts on the park, Dane Dances, brat fest, etc.)
Check on Brat Fest though, they switch the dates from year to year...They have music, beer, food, and other entertainment. It's very mid-west.
Thanks for the info...I'll check out that site and look into the brat fest.
The week we are there also happens to be craft beer week in Madison, so at least we can take advantage of tastings/brewery tours.
In Madison you'll want to check out the Farmer's Market on the capital square. It's held each Saturday until 1 pm, and it's massive. A lot to see, eat, and buy! Great atmosphere.
An event held in May and about 15 minutes south of Madison is the Syttende Mai festival. It's in a small town called Stoughton that has a big Norwegian roots. There is traditional norse costume and dancing performances. Lots of Norwegian arts and crafts and regular festival fun as well. It's a good time.
Chicago's craft beer week is May 17-27 and is really fun, if the timing works for your trip
eta: If you haven't done them before, in MKE I rec Lakefront Brewery's tour and Sprechers.

I did Madison/Chicago last June.
I have noting to add about festivals, but second the farmer's market. We really enjoyed it and eating right there at The Old Fashioned for lunch and L'Etoile for dinner. We enjoyed Eno Vino Wine Bar as well, but it was not downtown.
Happy planning:)
The farmer's market is fun and you can wander around State Street before or after as well.
Syttende Mai also has a 20 mile run and a 17 mile walk if you are interested in running or walking from Madison to Stoughton.
