How do I get BCP in Australia?

I'm pretty sure I asked this in one of my weekly Australia questions threads but I can't seem to find it.  If you can, feel free to link to it.

How does one go about getting BCP here?  I have private health insurance, not Medicare, and don't have a GP/PCP that I know of.

I don't want to get KTFU and only have a 2 month supply left.  Halp!

Re: How do I get BCP in Australia?

  • you have to go to gp and get a prescription

you have the option of going to a 'private' gp - where you pay a small 'gap' fee

or you can go to a pulbic one - where you (at least here) have to wait in a long queue and can't make appointments

I'd advise you call around gp practices in your area and get signed up for one

you will need a medicare number as well .......... to go to a gap (I believe...)

meidcare offices are at most malls and downtown

private insurance doesn't cover anything for BCP, unless they cover something for prescription costs - which most don't

you'll have to pay a gap fee - but they aren't huge

  • hmmm I see to enrol in medicare you have to have a permanent visa

to be honest I'm not sure what you're supposed to do then - sorry!

gblake will probably be helpful on this one..... since her dh and her are American

  • I have private health care insurance and I contacted my insurance company for a doctor referral. That's how I would find a doctor. It's okay if you fall pregnant (a term I hear the Aussies say a lot). Theres another one AmericaninOz may know, up the duff? Something like that. :)

  • Also, the way our insurance works is we pay all cost out of pocket at first then we submit our receipts for full reimbursement.

  • ha ha yea - I loved that pregnancy book called Up the Duff

did you read that? SO funny

the terms here can be SO odd :)

(like the UK) I still find it weird to say 'I'm going to hospital'

rather than 'I'm going to the hospital'

    anyhow - I digress.....

Great idea, I will do that.  Thanks!

  • I don't even get that term, up the duff. I'll have to read the book. :)

  • So GPs can do it?

I'm due for a pap, so can they do that as well?

  • Unsure, it's weird. I know breast exams are done at the GPs and not at the OB/GYNs. I've only gone to an OB/ GYN here and so that's the only place I've done a pap.

  • yes - gps definitely do paps

I don't know what it means - I always just assumed the baby was 'up your duff'

but then when I google the meaning it seems to go back to old english slang

  • I always just got my prescription from my GP and the GP does a pap as well. I am covered by Medicare though, so I don't know exactly what you would do. I think I used to pay about $50 for a 3 month supply? I used to take Yasmin. You do not need to have a pap to get the prescription, just walk in and ask for it, I used to get a prescription for 12 mths. I think medical center wait times vary by area. At our local centre I just go in (no appt), sometimes I'm seen right away, sometimes I have to wait about 1/2 hour or so, nothing too terrible. But as americaninOz said, I think this can really vary.

I am overdue for my Pap by US standards, but here they only do them every 2 years.  I thought it would be easy to get one done then be on the every 2 year schedule.  The clinic here very grudgingly made an appointment for an exam and a Pap and then it was such a horrid experience, I left before the doctor did anything.  Truly -- it was awful.  I gave up and decided to get my check-up done out of pocket in the US when I go home in December.  It as really a horrid experience for me.  I came home and cried for over two hours.  The doctor would not do an internal exam and would not do a breast exam.

I had a similarly bad experience at the dentist when I went in because I was having pain in my jaw.  The dentist took an x-ray, said she couldn't see anything that would cause pain and told me to take ibuprofen with codeine for 15 days and make another appointment if I was still in pain.  I had scheduled a cleaning as well and the dentist ran over my front teeth with a polishing tip -- If it took more than ten minutes, I'd be surprised.  I am used to cleanings taking over 45 minutes and being much more thorough.

Overall, I have not had good experiences with medical or dental staff here.

I don't mind being held to a higher standard; I mind being held to a lower one. (Sam Seaborn, The West Wing)

  • DorothyinAus, it's interesting you say that about Australian doctors and I'm Australian. We underwent 3 cycles of fertility treatment in the US after many cycles here. The difference was like night and day. in the US, the doctor did all the scans, was very attentive, patient and kind. He didn't treat DH and I like idiots when we asked questions or get irritated when we suggested something we had read on the internet. The nurse got my blood first time, each and every time. I have difficult veins to get blood out of and have had some horrible experiences here.

My regular GP is brilliant but I've encountered some very mediocre ones. I don't get him to do the girly stuff though because I've known him for too long and I'm embarassed.

Which state are you living in? I ask becaue ironically I get my paps done by an American lady GP in Hornsby - she's fantastic. I highly recommend her. If you live in Sydney and want her details - just PM me.

  • Wise rita - you have a pm.
  • Just ring a GP, make an appointment, you'll get a script and get it filled at the chemist. No need to register or anything like in the UK. You should be able to be seen in a day or two, as well. And you can do it on a Saturday or in the evening, as well.

Your pill won't be the same price as the PP posted, you aren't eligible for the PBS, right?  On the PBS all drugs cost the same, as long as they are actually more than that. So it might cost $300 or $10,000 and you pay either $35 or $5 depending on your income and how much you've spent on medical stuff that year.

Bulk billing is the term for a public clinic, but I've never heard of not being able to make an appointment! They're just cheaper because there's no gap charged for people with medicare.

An gynae is a specialist, you would only see one if you had some problem. I've never seen one.

  • that really stinks that you've had such bad experiences here Dorothy:(

I have had only good experiences - once I found a GP and a dentist that I liked

  • I don't know anything about how tings are in Australia, I just decided to come and share that when I read this post title I translated BCP as  "Book of Common Prayer" because I'm Episcopal and I thought "huh?" until I realized what you meant... laughing at myself...

Me too with only good experiences. I have a  great GP who is also an OB/GYN. The only downside is it takes about 2 months for an appointment (they also have a first in first served time from 8am -10am and see as many walkins as possible which is good for once off things). I also have a great dentist but due to costs I only go about once a year and in emergencies. We much rather save our cash and take a trip to Thailand once a year and get all our dental done there. You can get everything done that would cost the same as one visit in Oz!

Up the duff is actually english in origin. It is really a round about phrase. A penis was referred to as a pudding and masterbation was to pull ones pudding. A women in the family way was termed to be in the pudding club. Dough was an alternate word for pudding and regional/alternate word/pronuncation for dough was duff. So hence up the duff- and also the more popular bun in the oven.
