Bump C&P: The Vaccines = Autism belief still alive and well

imageJennybake12:

I was watching GMA this morning and saw new statistics that show that 1 in 52 boys between 2006-2008 have some form of autism and 1 in 252 girls. After seeing this, I just can't stop thinking about it. Autism has always been a concern of mine, even years before I became pregnant. I try not to think about it too much because I just don't think worrying about it is helpful. I have been trying to schedule some meetings with potential pediatrians. I am hopeful they can easy my mind.

Would any of you ladies like to share your thoughts on this topic or your insights? I have tried to educate myself. It seems like a major factor in autism is genetics. I can't remember the name of the drug I was reading about the other day (can't find the article I was reading) but it was saying how it is a mercury based preservative that they put in vaccines that seem to have a stong correlation to autism. There are mercury free vaccines avaiable and apparently the FDA pushes doctors to mercury based/perservative vaccines. Have any of you heard of this?

It just scares me to know that of all of us on the boards having boys, some of us are going to have autistic babies. I just want to be as educated as possible and share our knowledge

  • you know, its not what she is saying that is making me put my head to my desk, because at least it sounds like she is trying to find out more etc and doesnt have a very strong opinion yet.

It's more the fact that she is like 10 years behind that makes me put my head down.  such wide-eyed innocence - "apparently it's a mercury based preservative!!"  I don't think she has gone far enough in her "research" lol...........

  • I am just amazed at how uneducated people are.  Not even  due to upbringing/schooling, but just their complete ignorance of the news.  Some people never watch the news or pick up a paper or a magazine (other than cosmo).  I just can't imagine life like that.

Yes! I watch the local and national news every night, and get a lot of other news here. S/O doesn't understand why.

Give her a week and she'll be all about MMR, then another week and she'll be formaldehyding with the best of them, by the time she give birth she'll be panicking about "toxins".

Some people still think the Earth is flat, too.  People have a tendency to want to hang onto their beliefs.  At least this one can be caught early, before she becomes a full-fledged anti-vaxxer,

To be fair, when you're single and not trying to have children, there's a lot of info that you probably mentally "turn off" because you just don't need it.  We all filter out information constantly, because we have no need (or interest) in every bit of info that bombards us.  Now she's trying to catch up and there's nothing wrong with that.

  • The poster my jaw dropped at is the behavioral therapist who, though not qualified to diagnose ASDs, thinks many of the kids she works with are not really on the spectrum but just have parents who suck at discipline. What a bltch.

It's definitely true for some, but to generalize naughty kids by saying their parents suck instead of them having an actual disorder is pretty sh!tty.
