Dean-na? This is a first name in my local paper. What is the purpose of the hyphen?

Any chance the dad's first name is Dean? I dislike hypens but this looks to me to be an attempt to emphasis that the name is derived from the dad's name (or some other relation/friend). Still - ugh.

Probably so you pronounce it like Deena, instead of DeAnna. It's still annoying and a horrible spelling, but probably for that purpose.
If I saw Deanna I would say it De-Anna, not like Dee-na.

I have had a few Dean-na / Deon-na / Deon-dra files cross my desk where I work. DS has a friend named Da-Neil and his mother told me it means "of Neil", which is his dad's name. I *think* his dad is Haitian, so it may be a cultural thing?

I'm sticking with my theory - it's to honor someone in the family - my guess is a dead uncle. I also like the idea that it is to emphasis the pronounciation of the name.
Either way, poor Dean-na. I'm sure her parents had good intentions but unusual spellings are rarely the way to go.
