Black Out Drapes?

I'm looking to DIY some blackout drapes for DS's nursery.

I've done regular drapes before, but it's been quite a while so I'm a bit rusty!

Do I need to buy a specific type of fabric? Or use any fabric and sew in a blackout liner?

Any good tutorials that you know of?

Thanks!

Re: Black Out Drapes?

  • I made blackout drapes for LA's room.  I sewed them in the same way I would any lined drape--just substituted blackout material for traditional lining fabric.  You can get blackout fabric at any store that sells home decor fabric--I'm pretty sure I bought mine at Joanns so I could get a discount.

  • Depending on the size of the window, you may find that it is cheaper to buy pre-made blackout curtains in a light color and cover them with your fabric.  It was for me- I bought light green ones and covered them on the front with home decor weight fabric for my guest room- the light colored ones were like $12 a panel on Amazon.
