Hi ladies,
Wondering if anyone has recs for things to do/places to stay in Bar Harbor in the summer? DH and I are planning on going for a week in mid to late June and doing 2 nights of camping, 2 nights at a B&B, and 2 nights at a resort (so I can get my drink on by the pool). We are not super athletic but like to bike, kayak, etc. and LOVE good food! Thanks for any info you can provide!
Re: Bar Harbor, ME in June
I've only been to the Bar Harbor area in the fall (November to be exact) but you're not far from Acadia National Park. Lots of hiking/biking trails for all fitness levels. There's also whale & seal watches out of Bar Harbor but I've never been on any. If you want to get oyr drink on locally, check out Bar Harbor Cellars; they do tastings & also sell locally grown foods. And there's a Mussel & Wine Festival in late June, maybe when you're there?:

I grew up in Maine and used to vacation in Bar Harbor every summer, it's a beautiful, beautiful place!
Definitely hit up Acadia National Park and get some hiking in. Thunder Hole is really cool if you catch it at the right time. Stop by the Jordan Pond House (in Acadia) for some delicious homemade popovers and jam. Atlantic Brewing Company is fun to check out if you're a beer/wine person. Kayaking is definitely fun in Bar Harbor, every time I've been we've always come across a few seals who swim right up to us. There's a lighthouse and national park tour on a catamaran that's pretty popular too.
Cadillac Mountain is the first place to see the sunrise in the United States and, obviously, the first place to see the sunset. So definitely try to catch either a sunrise or sunset up at the top, it's stunning (and I say this as someone who now lives in Hawaii, the sunset on Cadillac is right up there with these Hawaiian sunsets)!
Just walking around the little town is fun. Grab some ice cream and people watch and browse all the little shops. I love Bar Harbor. It just screams "MAINE" to me and I love that. Have fun!
We've been to Bar Harbor/Mt. Desert Island twice & love it!:
- visit a lobster pound (if you like lobster!)
)
- definitely some hikes in Acadia, i really like the Beehive hike - as it takes you above where Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, etc is & is definitely a work-out
- Atlantic Brewing Company
- tour Southwest Harbor - cute wine & cheese shop
- walk around downtown - have lobster ice cream @ Ben & Bill's Chocolate Emporium
Thank you all for the suggestions so far! We definitely want to do a whale watch, and I would LOVE to kayak with the seals. Lobsters are a must and I think I will have to try the blueberry and the lobster ice cream at Ben and Bill's. I think we may be there during the Legacy of the Arts Festival, and maybe the Wine and Mussel Festival, so I'll be sure to keep notes on those.
My brother used to rent out a house near Aacdia National Park. Now he lives there permanently. To help friends who came to visit and renters of the property he put together the following website. I have done a lot of things on there when I visited. Not sure if you are driving up the coast to get there. If so, he covers that too.http://www.tourcoastalmaine.com/. Down East Maine is the Bar Harbor area.
I recommend renting bikes, riding the carriage roads and trails and stopping at Jordan Pond for lunch on the lawn. A ways away but still on Mt Desert Island in Bass Harbor is a great Lobster Pound called Thurstons Lobster Pound. It is where the locals go. Definitely worth it. LLB has an outlet store in Freeport and in Ellsworth.
If you drive up the coast Reds Eats in Wiscasset is great for a lobster roll. HTH.
