How to ditch the scale?

Alright, I admit I am obsessed with the scale. I let it dictate far too much joy or disappointment in myself.

Has anyone successfully ditched the scale? I have about 20 more pounds to lose, but I'd like to focus more on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and less on obsessing over how much weight I lost that week. I have lost weight in the past by weighing myself every week.. but really, I'd like to just completely stop weighing myself. How else do you measure success? Love to hear some thoughts on this, thanks!

  • Throw it out.  Donate it to goodwill.

  • I am in the same position as you are. I am debating (at DH's request) giving up the scale.

Last month I started P90 and C25k, tracking my calorie intake with MyFitnessPal. In the past 10 months, I lost 55lbs with WW, but this last month, with my exercise and calorie counting, I have not lost a pound. In fact, even though I stick to the plan religiously, I may have even gained a pound.

But, I took my chest, arm, thigh, waist and hip measurements before I began my current exercise routine. And despite my issues with the scale, I have lost inches all over.

So it's progress. But, TBH, it isn't quite enough to negate my feelings about not losing any weight at all. GL!

  • I hate to sound snarky, but why don't you just throw it out?  Seriously. Just throw it away.  Then you don't have to worry about it.

if you knwo you have an issue with the scale you need to just go cold turkey and get rid of them all.

Now my post title is looking stupid because I realize it kind of sounds like I'm literally asking how to get rid of the scale.

I guess I'm curious what other ways people measure successes if you're not weighing yourself all the time. Measurements? Workout logs? Food journals?

  • You could take pictures of yourself once a month or so?

  • I've always gone by how my clothes fit.  It was a good indicator until I started to do more strength training and my thighs got bigger.  Now I go by how I feel.  I can tell if I've ben slacking or eating the wrong stuff.  just don't overthink it.  I think people nitpick everything to death and it's really not that complicated.

  • I was in the same position a year ago. I would weigh every few days. If I didn't lose, I was completely distraught. First, I tried to get my husband to hide the scale, but I would find it. Then I decided to only weigh myself once a month and somehow that stuck. I like seeing a "big" number on the scale. I weigh once a month, usually the week after my period.

To be honest, I don't weigh that much anymore because I am not trying to compete with the scale, I am trying to fit into my clothes better. If I feel bloated or my fingers feel swollen, I don't weigh. If I've had any type of alcohol, I don't weigh. I've lost almost 50 pounds doing this. I can usually tell when I've lost around 9/10 pounds because I go down a size.

    Good luck!

If you want to skip weighing and measuring, I think clothing is a pretty good marker. Either find pants/shirt that you want to shrink out of or a slightly smaller size that you'd like to shrink into and check in every so often.

  • A number of years ago I went through an eating disorder and the scale absolutely ruled my life (weighed myself 3 times a day).  Not that that's what you're going through, but now that I'm trying to get myself in shape I won't even allow myself to have one in the house.  Those things drive me nuts!

I've been hitting the gym and exercising portion control for the past 4 months ago - I base my results off of how clothes fit more than anything.  I just started to keep a food journal also since I feel like I've hit a plateau.

I think what the PP said about judging by clothes is a really good marker!  Good luck!
