How do you determine your target weight?

I have been losing weight for about 15 months now (my starting weight was 98 kg or 216 pounds). My original target was 75 kg (165 pounds) ,but  the top of my healthy weight range based on height is 72kg (158 pounds). I am currently at 78 kg and starting to re-think my original goal. How do you determine what your target weight is? I originally chose 75kg becuase i had been fit and able to maintain that weight for many years.

Re: How do you determine your target weight?

  • I determine my ideal weight by looking at a BMI (body mass index) chart. Your ideal BMI, which is calculated based on your weight and height, is about 22. For instance, I am 5'5, so my ideal weight would be around 140 pounds. Does that make sense? Good luck and congrats on your weight loss so far.

  • I picked my target weight based sort of on BMI but also based on my body type, which BMI does not take into account.  My target is between 165-170.  I am 5'6" and I have a LARGE, somewhat muscular frame.  I think that this weight is something reasonable that I can maintain but also is healtheir than my current weight.
  • To be honest, I just thought back to a time when I remember feeling like I looked my best, and picked that number.  (and of course it is reasonable for my height).

I think that it's normal to re-evaluate and create a new weight loss goal once you are near or hit your original target.  You've worked hard and had success, why not continue! Good luck!

  • I go by body fat % and try to aim to be within 21-24%.  That's when I feel healthiest since BMI isnt the whole picture and clothing sizes can vary in stores.  I can be a size 10 in one store and 12 in another.
