Longtime lurker coming out of hiding---ask me anything!

Hey there--I've been lurking for quite awhile on this board (and ML, RE and TIP) and it's time I started participating. This is my favorite board so I'm starting here!

  • Copzgirl: I love this board because of all the diversity and discussion about politics. I don't profess to be an expert, but since the last election, I've taken a deeper interest in politics and how our lives are impacted by political decisions.

What is your stance on white on white crime?

Crime in general sucks. People who commit crimes should be punished for their actions and stupidity.

  • Why did you feel the need to start an "ask me anything" thread vs. just starting posting?
A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.

I like all Skittles and think everyone should have access to their own.

How would you describe your political views?

I would say my political views are definitely more liberal where social policy is concerned. As for fiscal policy, I'm not conservative but more moderate, I think. I want to help people who need help temporarily as well as those who will always need help. I believe that those who will always need help should have the support of our society at large. That being said, I believe that too many people are taking advantage of "the system" and that we need to work to eliminate fraud in our social programs. We should help people help themselves to get to a point where they can support themselves and their families. The only people who should be on social programs longtern, in my opinion, are those who are physically or mentally unable to care for/support themselves.

I also believe that the way to get out of our deficit mess is a combo of both reduced spending and higher taxes, not one or the other.

To put it another way, I think Santorum is BSC and Romney is a flip flopper. I will be voting for Obama.

Yes. I am from Charlottesville originally (graduated from UVA) but spent 15 years on the West Coast, near San Francisco. I moved back to Virginia (Richmond) six years ago.

Well, honestly, I couldn't remember which method was "preferred" by this board and it seemed like a good way to get started.

This is the first time I've posted on my Ipad so I apologize if the format is wonky. I think that for people who have access to healthcare in this country, the quality of care is generally pretty high. The problem is that not everyone has access/can afford healthcare under our current system and I think that needs to be fixed. I'd like to see healtcare NOT tied to a particular employer and want everyone to have access to it. Now, I am no expert so i don't have a plan around what to do. At the very least, we need to get people away from the ER when they don't have an emergency (due to the huge costs of the ER). I'm troubled by the healthcare industry as a "for profit" institution when I believe that everyone has a right to quality healthcare. At the same time, I think it is a slippery slope when we start moving away from market driven pricing. In the case of healthcare, though, I think the ends may justify the means. The idea that people should be forced into bankruptcy due to a catastrophic healthcare problem is just crazy to me.

Thats what concerns me about the current US system. I'm Canadian so we obviously have UHC, I cant imagine it any different.

That being said, there are some great medical advances that have come out of the US, probably as a result of a market-based system, so there are certainly positives.

I'd love to see the US look at the German system more closely. For that matter, I'd love Canada to look at the German model :)

I don't know anything about the German model but will look that up. I'm very interested i how other countries deal with this problem. Speaking of the Canadian system, my husband worked for a Canadian company for a few years. His co-workers all raved about the healthcare and gave example after example of why they were so happy with it. In one case, his co-worker's wife had been diagnosed with a rare cancer. The guy said that they weren't able to treat her in Canada so they sent her to Los Angeles for treatment and even paid for him to travel to be with her. Obviously he had nothing but great things to say about the Canadian system. Is this typically how the system works or is this an anomaly?
