I'm finally getting my summer travel plans together and it looks like I'll have a week to spend in Vietnam! I really don't know much about the place - where to go? What to see? Any tips would be great!
Re: Talk to me about Vietnam
When I first went to Vietnam in 2002 I prefered the North, particularily Hanoi and Halong Bay. Most people disagree with me and when we went to HCM City in 2008 I definately loved it, I don't know if it was becuase I was young and travelling on my own in 2002 and it was over whealming or if something has changed in the city to make it more enjoyable (I'm guessing it's the first point!).
You can read my blog posts about that second trip here
Ha Long Bay is uh-may-zing, definitely a cannot miss destination.
I definitely preferred HCM City over Hanoi, but am glad to have visited Hanoi once.
In a week you will need to concentrate on just one part of the country (north; south or central).
North - Hanoi, Halong Bay, Sapa (minority tribes and markets in the surrounding villages - overnight train to Lao Cai get there and back from Hanoi)
Central - Danang, Hoi An and Hue - History, beaches, tailors
South - HCMC, Mekong Delta (Can Tho, floating market) , Phan Thiet or Phu Quoc for beaches, Dalat (to get away from the heat and relax in the hills)
I lived there for 7 years, so if you have more specific questions, I'd be happy to give you some tips!
Vietnam is really beautiful place to travel around i had also visited there & the places i like there the most are Halong Bay, Hue, Hoi An,Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi.

It depends what kind of atmosphere you are looking for. Both Hanoi and HCMC are huge and crowded, but have lots to see and more variety of food, etc than the center of the country.
I live in Da Nang, and it's beautiful, surrounded by lush mountains and the ocean. I feel like its the perfect size for me; not too big, not too small. It also has easy access to Hoi An and Hue, two of the country's bigger tourist towns. Da Nang has nice beaches and the longest cable car in the world that will take you to the top of a mountain that overlooks the city. If you by chance end up coming here, let me know and we can show you around
I have been here about 7 months and the one thing I still really want to see is Halong Bay.
