Working out over lunch hour questions

I went to the gym over lunch today for the first time.  It kind of sucked.  I was really, really happy I went since it felt great but I felt so rushed.

Does this go away after you get in a solid routine?  Do you find yourself streamlining your efforts more efficiently?  Normally I'd take my time and not have to worry about changing back in to heels, washing my face, putting on makeup, etc.  I don't want to be discouraged just yet but I felt like I was just hitting my stride when I had to wrap things up.

  • I did a 45 minute pump class over the lunch hour for a while.  It was nice to get to the gym and do something productive, but it took too much time to do the damage repair and get back within 1.5 hours.  And I felt like my hair was dirty and gross all afternoon.  I'd rather go early and get it done before work.

  • I used to workout at lunch on my onsite gym, but my new location doesn't have a gym.  My gym is what should be a 2 min drive, but there is crazy construction so it takes more like 10 min to get to the gym.  I can get in a 30-45 min workout, shower, change, and be back to the office in ~ 1.5 hrs.  (I don't wash my hair and can shower pretty quickly.)  It is a little longer than I would want to spend for lunch, but I really enjoy having a break in my day.  I do lunch time workouts on days when I have a shorter workout planned, if I want to do a longer run or cardio and strength I do those after work.  I probably workout at lunch 2x a week.
  • I think it does get a lot easier over time. 

    I workout almost every day at lunch and when I first started I felt rushed too (and I still do at times) but it truly does work out great for me to go at lunch.  Once you go for a couple of weeks you'll definitely learn to streamline your workouts and figure out what you can and can't do to make it back to work on time.  Then you have the satisfaction of knowing that your workout is done for the day, and I think it gives you a little kick of energy to get through that afternoon slump.

  • I don't work out over lunch, but I've started walking with friends in the morning before work/school.  We meet at 6:15 and do four laps of the neighborhood, which takes about 40 minutes.  The goal is to be done by 7, which is when most of the kids start waking up and those who work need to hit the shower.

    The first couple of days sucked big time for me.  I was tired, my pace was off.  By the end of the first week, though, that had gone away and now I actually look forward to it.  It's quick, and not necessarily the higher intensity cardio I'm used to, but I can fit that and weight training in later in the day and/or on weekends.  Getting the walking done leaves me feeling really accomplished and energized for the rest of the day. 

    So to make my long story really short...yes, I think it does get better!  Good luck! 

  • I agree that it does get easier over time.  You'll want to go to the gym with a plan each day.  I find that if I have a plan on what I'm going to do I'm much more efficient.  I've been working out over lunch for the last 2 years and I can get a really good workout in.  Its nice because it breaks up my day.

  • Thanks ladies!  I appreciate the input.  And I'm glad to hear it gets a bit easier.

     I agree that's it is a nice way to break up the day and it gives me an energy boost.  Not to mention it leaves the evenings for other things.

    I do like the suggestion about using lunch for shorter routines.  Instead of always going at lunch, I think I'll try for 2 or 3 times a week and keep my longer workouts for the evening or weekends.
