Shorty20 Re: RNR Savannah

Hey!  I just saw your comment below asking about this race.

I'm still on the fence about it almost 5 months later.

It was an inaugural race so obviously there were some logistical issues.  On the other hand, RNR has been having some logistical issues at a lot of their races lately so I'm unable to say which was the cause.

My DH and I along with our daughter who was just over a year at the time didn't really have any issues at all but apparently there were a lot for people who were bussed to the start from the mall parking lots.

We stayed at the airport and had no issues riding the shuttles to the start or back to our hotels after it was over.

If money was no object I'd stay right downtown at the start line but last time I checked it was over $300/night.  If you can swing it and they aren't booked already I'd stay there.  You literally walk downstairs into your corral.

About the race.  This weekend I ran Cooper River in Charleston for the first time ever so it is timely that you ask this.

RNR Savannah does not showcase Savannah at all in any way, shape, or form unless they change the course this year.

Mile 1 takes you up an small overpass which is the only hill in the race and immediately through the less fortunate areas of the city until mile 9ish if I remember correctly.

It is flat.  The whole entire course is flat and fast.  Crowd support is amazing as well.

I can't even say I'd never run it again.  In all actuality, I probably would if they would make more of the course through actual Savannah instead of industrial areas.

Finally, the marathon apparently runs out on the highway which I heard sucked as well.

I'd give it like a 6 out of 10 as far as races go.  Good luck and have fun!

Re: Shorty20 Re: RNR Savannah

  • Thanks for the info!
  • I'll respond for my DH - he ran the full marathon

We got married in Savannah in '07 and have been visiting there for over 10 years. We know the city fairly well.

We stayed with relatives out on Wilmington Island. If we could spend the $300 (and it IS tempting to roll out of bed and be at your start corral!) we would have stayed on River or Bay St! But that is crazy expensive for Savannah. We had family drive us to the start at 0-dark-30 so we walked to a Starbucks (that had yet to open!) and waited on coffee and a nice warm restroom Wink

DH said the course was pretty awful for the conditions. HIGH winds (made worse by going over the lonely expressway), and as a spectator I thought I would never get warm again. It was maybe high 40's in the early hours. DH is a ~3:30 marathoner so I was not out there for forever, but for those 3+ hours I was chilled to the bone. He didn't love going through the sketchier parts of Savannah but he said the crowd support was awesome when you had it, lonely/boring without it. DH may or may not do it again as he's running Chicago in Oct and we have a baby coming in Aug. I'd kinda like to see him more often this year.

  • I'm looking into this race as well. I went to Savannah last week and we walked the entire historic district. It *kind of* seems like part of the half DO go through historic districts. I don't know how they can't at least in part. The finish is in famous Forsyth Park and the start is in a historic part of town as well.

And that is really it. You run out of town immediately and return around mile 9 to run towards the finish. Mile 9-13 are not bad but this race truly does not showcase Savannah IMO.

Gotcha. I was looking at the map trying to figure out if it went right out of the cool part. This bums me out about the RnR series. I felt like the course at San Jose was pretty similar to what you described here and it makes me wary about this course too...I can't tell if it's RnR OR (more likely) that they can't get their cities to get on board with putting the courses right through the best parts of town.

Some older 10Ks (Like BolderBoulder) showcase the BEST parts of the towns and it makes the courses fun. Even I'm pretty sure RnR san diego does a pretty good job...it makes me wonder what the deal is...

Anyways...I'm still on the fence between this and maybe somewhere else..

Thanks for the info..sorry to hijack!

If you are standing downtown at the start the corrals are directly in front of Holiday Inn Express in the Historic District.

You are facing an overpass directly ahead.  The race starts and you run up and over that overpass which takes you immediately out of the historic district.

At around miles 8-9ish, you do start to return but honestly I'd be only 25% of the course is really in the nicer areas of town that people come to  Savannah to see.

I wouldn't discourage anyone from running it but don't go into it like I did expecting to run through Savannah.  You don't.

One more final point that I remembered just now.  If they do not change the expo location this year and you decide to run it make sure you get there the first day it opens.

Last year it was on an island with one way in and out and it was a huge cluster.  I've got to think they will be changing that this year.

    Good luck and have fun!
