AHHHHHHH. My worst fear.

Cockroaches.  I have a phobia.  Seriously.  I die inside a little when I see one, even if only on TV.  I've always told me husband that if I ever saw one in our house that I would not live here anymore.

My grandmother is a hoarder (not really, but almost).  And she has a problem with buying junk for my kids.  She just dropped off a bunch of junk at my mom's house and I grabbed some stuff that I thought my kids would play with and took it home with me.

I just pulled open one of the bags for my son and there was a bug in it that looked like a cockroach, only probably half of the size of anything I've ever seen.

I took the bag outside and bashed it with something until the bug was dead.

Now I am flipping out with full on panic attacks thinking that there could have been other bugs that got into my house.

Someone tell me it's all going to be OK.  Tongue TiedCrying

  • I feel your pain. Hate bugs with a passion, live in Florida, it really sucks. But it will be ok. Just scrub what the bug might have touched and it will make you feel a lot better. I'd probably call the bug guy but I'm over dramatic like that.

  • Deep breaths.

Here in NYC, cockroaches are a fact of life, albeit a gross one. Get some traps and a can of RAID and all will be fine. This is coming from the lady who paid the bug people 400 bucks to bring the little dog in order to determine that there were no bedbugs in the house.

  • If it wasn't in your house long, it's probably okay.  I'd just sort through the boxes outside (put that is stating the obvious, sorry).

  • Yeah, I'm not okay with bugs or pests. I would have freaked out.

  • I almost screamed at my desk!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!

  • Luckily I had only brought two little grocery bags full of stuff in.  There is another box in my trunk and now I'm scared to even open it.  The bags are sitting on my lawn now.  I'm too afraid to open them.

I'm not even lying.  If I end up with cockroaches I am moving out.  My only experience with them was one nasty apartment in college and the thought of ever having to live in another place where I fear something crawling in my ear while I sleep is not funny.

  • Am I weird in that they don't really bother me?  I don't want them in my home, crawling over me as I sleep, but I don't freak out when I see them (and I see them often in Hawaii). I guess growing up in Florida desensitizes you to certain things.

It's the sleeping part that really bothers me, and for that I blame watching too many discovery channel specials as a kid.  There's a parasitic bug that sucks on your drool!  It only comes out at night, when you sleep, and it's freaky.

This.  I'm a mouth breather too.  I imagine them trying to eat the toothpaste off of my teeth at night or something.

And any bug that crunches when you step on it freaks me out.

We had one in our hotel room in Hawaii. Not the most recent visit, but the one before. Not okay. I freaked out and went through my bags and everything. Not good for a germaphobe like me.

I like the crunch Embarrassed It's just so satisfying.

No, I've never set pets on fire.  Why do you ask?

  • *holds AW* I share this fear.

  • I probably shouldn't share here that, in my first apartment after college, I had atomic ones living somewhere in my microwave.

The crunch is why I hate them - most bugs don't bother me but the ones that crunch - I jump out of my skin.

Two of my sisters (who love pets by the way) used to look for slugs in the garden when they were little, pour salt on them and light them on fire. They claimed they could "hear them scream" Indifferent

  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who has an irrational fear of those God forsaken creatures, complete with nightmares. I wake myself up at least once a week with cockroach night terrors. ::shudder::
  • Oh AW Ive never had to deal with those.  OTOH, silverfish????  I'm going to bet they are a close second to cockroaches.

I once woke up with a silverfish crawling up my arm.

This past October I had a 30-minute showdown with the biggest freaking spider I have ever seen in my life.  It was in my pantry and my H was traveling for work.  I put on thick gloves, pulled out the extra-long attachment for my vacuum, spent about 10 minutes finding the nerve to pull the various items sitting on the floor out of the way (SCARY!!) and just stood there staring at it for ages before I found the nerve to suck it up with the vacuum.  I then ran with the vacuum out into the garage and left the vacuum out there all night in case it found a way out.

    Bugs are NOT NATURAL.

I'm actually scared to squish a spider.  I have seriously trapped spiders and other bugs under a heavy glass before and left it in the middle of the floor all day until DH gets home so he can handle the squishing.

In a weird way I like spiders..they get all the other bugs.

That said, I now know why I don't like the word squicky....sounds too much like squishy.

silverfish or centipedes? cause i guess they are different. dear god...centipedes. we get 4 inch long ones in our condo sometimes - when it's really dry in the middle of summer they come up the drains. one scurried across our kitchen floor last summer and i saw it two rooms away. the cat looked at me like...did you just see that?

(note - he did eat one once - spit it out immediately. apparently didn't like all the legs. i was freaking out when he picked it up in his mouth. yuck!!).

cockroaches and centipedes are creatures of satan. i buy that.

now spiders - we sort of let them live. or at least i do. we also had this funny beetle recently that lived in a plant in our bathroom. called him ringo (yeah...). he didn't move very fast. well, at all really. so i let him live there for a bit till DH had enough and took him outside. poor ringo...
