What to expect: Spin Class

I'm sure this has been asked before but I never have much luck searching the boards for answers unless the topic was a recent one. Sorry for what is probably a repeat:

I signed up for an earlybird spin class this Friday at the Y.  I have no idea what to expect.  The class is 55 minutes long - what should I bring?  What should I expect?  What are the classes like (generally - I realize they are all going to be different).

  • Definitely get there early (at least 10 mins) to find a bike and let the instructor know its your first class so they can help you with proper bike setup.  Bring plenty of water and a small towel (I usually grab an extra bathroom hand towel from home) so you can de-sweat yourself as needed...and expect your butt and lady bits to hurt during/after.  If they don't, great but they probably will.

    Most of all though is go at your own pace/resistance levels.  The nice thing about spin class is that you can adjust the bike resistance to your own fitness levels, so don't feel like you have to pedal as fast or have the resistance up as high as the people around you.

    Oh, and have fun! ;)

  • Ditto everything Lori said.  Do your own ride.  The instructor will guide you through various hills, flats, standing, sitting, etc.  If you need to back off a little - fine.  Go as hard as you want to; no one will care what you're doing.  I've found classmates to always be very supportive of new people.  If you don't like the instructor or music, try another class.

    You won't be sore for long.  Enjoy!

    Also, I prefer to wear capri length leggings to spin.  Shorts can ride up and then your leg could rub against the seat when climbing hills.  Pants that are baggy at the bottom really bug me when I ride b/c the flap around so much.  I might just be strange though with my super specific workout gear requirement. :)  Enjoy your first class!
