Air Travel with Toddlers to Germany?

Anyone have any tips for easier air travel with toddlers to Germany? They are 2.

We plan on putting the kids in separate rows by the widow and Iwill sit with one and my Dh will sit with the other.

We will be bringing car seats with us to use on the plane. We will keep them in the stroller and check the stroller right before we board. Do I need covers for the car seats and stroller? Should I label & tag everything?

Are there rules about bringing snacks on board? I wanted to pack loose cheerios and other stuff in plastic bags for my kids.

I think I have the entertainment covered.

Anything I might not know? This is our first time doing this! Thanks!

  • Why are you sitting in separate rows instead of taking a whole center row?

I think dry snacks are fine.

Not all European airports return gate-checked stuff to the gate after landing and you have to get it at the luggage carousel which 1) would require a tag and 2) mean you have to lug the car seats through the airport.. I'd check with your airline to see what their policy is.

If you have any Germany-specific toddler questions page Smudgesmom on International Nesties.

    Have fun!

  • I know the return flight doesn't have middle seats. I guess it's a smaller airplane.

    Thanks!

  • Are you sure you want to bring car seats. We did that once with DD with a flight to Maui. While it kept her secure and still, it was a hassle to put in and she kept kicking the seat in front of her. I would get CARES harnesses instead. We have flown with DD and DS twice in the past year, once to Italy and once to the Netherlands.

Bring a new toy or game. Bring a doodle buddy for each or something they can color on. Bring lots of snacks. Can you give each a small backpack in which they can carry their snacks/toys? If there is a center aisle with 4 seats I'd go for that. Much easier to hand a kid over to the other parent when one has to use the bathroom (assuming they won't stay in their seat the whole time ;) )

  • I took my DS to Italy when he was a few months shy of 3 years old.  I have tips in my supermom blog.
  • yes I've heard the same thing about toddlers and carseats - that it puts them at the exact length to kick the seat in front of them

so when I travel to the US with my toddler in a few months time I'm using a CARES harness, less to carry with too! we used it on a short flight recently & it went brilliantly :)

you can bring any snacks you want - I brought tons of loose food like that for dd

I'd buy bags to check your strollers - just to protect them from getting dirty

  • I didn't want to spend the extra money on CARES. They are expensive and I would have to buy 2. We will need the car seats anyway while we are there.

I fly Continental so they never had middle row. Would they stay in a seatbelt without the seat?  I brought one for my kids once but never again.

. Will you be able to walk with both kids, the car seats plus carry on luggage if you do not get your stroller back at the gate?

You can rent a CARES on eBay for less. We stopped bringing car seats on when our son was 18 months and we were flying back from the UK and he wanted yo kick the seat for 9 hours. It was horrible, now we check car seats with luggage

I think my DH would put everything on one of those carts if that happened and I could walk with the kids.
