IHO Fat Tuesday: Betty Draper got fat.

Re: IHO Fat Tuesday: Betty Draper got fat.

  • It's still a tumor on her thyroid which can still make you fat.

  • It's an interesting way to deal with January Jones's pregnancy.

I kind of loved it at the end of the episode when she ate the rest of Sally's ice cream.  I don't know why, but that made me laugh.

ahhh, that's how they did it!  I was wondering ;) I do think it's timely though - meaning, timely given the 60s, the "fall" of the housewife and the advent of "mothers' little helpers" and surge of processed foods (anyone notice the Bugles?) and diet pills.

    Sorry to disappoint you.

  • i thought it was an interesting twist.  it makes me curious about what they're going to do for her character.

and i was happy to see her not being an asshat to her kids.  i get that she's a self-centered and terrible person, but a lot of her parenting looks to me to just be how people parented back in the day (not the shaming and other bullshiit, but the disinterest).  it was nice to round her out more (no pun intended) and make her less of a mommy dearest caricature.

    kiss it, nest.

I actually think there was something more going on b/c JJ's face wasn't that fat when she was pregnant.  I think they enhanced it.

  • Did they use a body double?

They used the same makeup tricks they used when Peggy was pregnant.

Can't find me on the nest anymore.

    Find me here instead!
  • They must have added plenty if all over "fat" because January Jones did not get very big when she was pregnant.

I felt like Sally was side-eyeing her mom eating all that ice cream.

As for the Bugles - my mom (college student in the 60's) said her favorite junk food at that time was Bugles dipped in sour cream. So yeah, they've been around for awhile. :)

ETA: And January Jones was absolutely wearing a fat suit. I felt like you could see it around her neck.

oh yes she was.  sally will have her revenge.

That's what I assumed.  Her jaw looked so weird, though, I was wondering if there was any computer element to it.

Ah, that makes sense.  But I assume it was spurred at least in part by her pregnancy and a need to cover up her belly?

They couldn't really do the Mariska Hargitay always-wear-a-coat thing since Betty's dresses that showed off her figure were a big part of her character.

  • I thought but for the prosthetic chin fat, she looked better.  Her face looked better and I believe the face-fat is real because of her pregnancy.  Also, lame with the body double when she got out of the tub.  Really?  That was necessary?

I totally noticed that.  I agree that it's a great way to provide even more insight into various cultural issues in the 1960's - like, okay, and this is what the weight issue was like back then.

Totally. They added some prosthetics to her neck/chin, for sure.

In terms of the episode, on one the one hand, I think Henry was an a$$hole for being mad that Betty told Don about her cancer scare. He's the father of her children. On the other hand, Megan was right - Betty always needs a reason to "need" Don.

I think Megan and Henry were both wrong.

Calling about a cancer scare is a perfectly legitimate need.  Megan is just a petulant child.

Of course she was. Betty's already given Sally body/weight issues by fearing Sally would become fat.

Also, I loved bugles as a kid. My grandparents would buy them. They probably wouldn't be as good to me now. Junk food never is.

She totally is and I'm so disappointed with that development.  I was really hopeful that she would be an interesting character, but she's just like Roger's wife except good with kids.

Also, I agree that a cancer scare is a legitimate need.

I'm still thinking she's going to be interesting.  I think she's playing a part.  She was the good housewife to capture Don, and now she's the slutty mistress to keep him.  I think it's very calculated.  Especially with that line at the party about her being a good actor.

I'm also wondering if her knowing about Don/*** is going to be central to her character.  The previews make me think Don tells at least Betty, but I don't know if he's doing that of his own free will.

So, I take back "just" a petulant child, and say that she's a child who's playing at being a very manipulative woman and so far mostly succeeding.

    I agree with you.

But add on to that how completely manipulative Don is. Therefore, I see the two of them working out just fine. Or crashing spectacularly, but I'm actually putting my bet on the former.

I think Don's mostly given up his manipulating.  He didn't give a hard sell to Heinz, he doesn't care about work anymore.  The role is now for Pete, complete with home in the suburbs.

Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if Don reverted, but right now they're making him the good guy.
