British Airways: WTH! no seat assignments when booking?

I am thinking of flying (w/ hubby) non-stop to London on BA (at a premium obviously) but just learned that you are not assigned seats until check-in. Would we be seated together automatically if we were delayed in checking in? Has anyone had good experiences picking seats this way? If I am paying more for non-stop I would want good seats, not left-overs with slim pickin's, so now I am having second thoughts. Thanks.

  • How did you learn that?

I was always able to online check in and choose seats.

Unless you pay extra for seats on BA from the US to London you don't get assigned seats until right before the flight, maybe 24 hours in advance? Or do you mean you were alwas able to do it the day before? Because if so then yes, that is true.

We have never had a problem getting seats together

  • Yep- we have had to deal with that a few times. We chose our seats 24 hours prior to when checking in on our last trip, but had to do it at the airport one time. On our last flight (PHX-LHR-JNB) we flew business class and even with a fewer number of seats, we got what I think to be great seats for each segment.

  • I don't know what other major airlines do but I've never been able to choose a seat at booking on transatlantic flights. I find the online check-in service quite neat, I don't mind waiting until I'm 24 hours away from my flight.

We do almost the same as Jells.  We fly business on BA from India to the US (and back) through LHR and our travel agent pre-books our seats when she tickets our booking.  There are times, though, when she's had to block them only 24-hours in advance.  We've never had a problem of being split up (family of 2+infant) or with crappy seats.

  • We usually have no trouble getting seats, but we have children and can call to get our seats 3 days before flying rather than 24 hrs. But I know my MIL always gets great seats when she checks in at the 24 hr mark.

  • I've never had a problem with being seated with DH on BA. I believe we get seats when confirming.
