Met with my nutritionist today

I'm really bummed by my 3 month labs. Crying I was really hopping they'd be better then my 1 month labs. I'm doing everything right and I am playing by the rules but my new digestive system just doesn't want to play along.

Before surgery my Iron level in my blood (not my hemoglobin or blood count) was just below normal. They weren't concerned b/c that's the case with most of their patients before surgery. Right after surgery they had me start taking this special kind of iron once a day. At my 1 month appointment my iron level was the same as it was pre-op when it should have increased. So they made me take the iron supplement twice a day. I hate taking this $@%! supplement. It taste like crap and it has some um... not so nice side effects.  I was really thinking it was falsely low b/c I had just gotten my period when I had my labs drawn. I took it twice a day faithfully for 4 weeks and then got my labs drawn again. Well my iron levels have dropped again!!!!!!!!!! So now the nutritionist is making me go see a Hematologist and said they will probably have to give me IV iron replacement therapy. Booooooo. The plus side is if I'm getting it via IV I wont have to take it orally anymore. The downs side is from what I read these transfusions take place over 2-3 hrs for a couple of weeks like chemo and they can have some serious side effects.

My protein levels were also low last time so they had me jack up my protein from 90 gms a day to 125 gms a day. Which is impossible for me to meet just buy eating alone. So almost everything I drink know has to have protein in it as well.  Well after a month of increasing my protein my %#!$ level has only gone up 1 pt and I needed it to go up by at least 4. So 3 more months of stuffing myself full of protein.

I knew this would be hard going into it, but I just thought if I followed all the rules so would my body. Guess not!

She was super impressed with my weight loss though and I've lost 48% of my excess body weight!!

  • Big time sucks that not everything is going according to plan. But on the flip side, you're doing so great and you're getting the results you wanted. Stay positive!

  • Oh that sucks!  Keep taking care of yourself though.  Hopefully your body will adjust soon.
  • That stinks. How long would you have to get the iron IV? Hopefully it won't take long and your body will join the party.

  • Wow, I really didn't know all that came along with it! I thought you just had surgery and as long as you ate what they said you were good to go. Sorry you're dealing with all of this!

  • Thanks girls. I need to step away from Dr. Google b/c I'm freaking myself out. I won't know how many infusions I will need if any until I see the new Dr. on the 17th. I was going to wait another week to get my blood drawn to give the changes I made to my supplements more time to work but honestly now I'm glad I didn't. I think my protein will be ok in a few more weeks they just need to figure out this iron deal.

Oh and have I mentioned that my hair has started to fall out Crying Thankfully I have crazy thick hair, but every time I run my hands/comb through it I get a huge clump of hair. That should stop once my protein reaches a normal level.

  • The hair loss may also be because you were under during surgery...:I know I lost hair starting at about 2 months post section due to the spinal and they say that's fairly common in surgeries??

i never knew so much went into this but boy that does sound tedious...I'm hoping that those infusions aren't too hard on you and won't be for too long

pregnancy, breastfeeding, and baby making all contribute to hair loss as well. My hair has more texture now than it did too. So strange what hormones can do!

  • ugh i am 38 and am going bald (quite literally) and no pregnancy here! but i digress. i am sorry you are going through that. it must be worrisome. i wish you had better results :-(. hopefully this is just early days/your body adjusting stuff and it will all settle down soon.
