Tell me how ridiculous this would be...(med cruise)

I am still working on planning mine and DH's first trip to Europe. He would love a med cruise, and I would love to spend a few days in Rome. I think a half & half trip would be a great compromise.

I found a 5 night cruise that begins & ends in Barcelona, Wed-Mon, and also has a day in Rome. We could do another city Sun-Tue.

Would it be crazy to fly to Rome, spend Sun-Tue in Rome, then fly to Barcelona on Wednesday for the cruise? Flights are only $34, but we would basically lose that day traveling.

Or, should we just keep things simple, spend Sun-Tue in Barcelona, and visit Rome for one day as part of the cruise?

A longer trip is not an option, since I am only allowed to take one week of vacation at the time.

Re: Tell me how ridiculous this would be...(med cruise)

  • Can you find a med cruise that either departs or ends in Rome so you can spend a few days there either before or after your trip without an extra day of travel?

I was thinking this as well....I know I have friends who did this for their honeymoon...I don't remember what cruise line they used though.

  • That was my first idea, but the cruises I see that start and end in Rome are  at least 7 nights long, so at most I would get one day in Rome.

I think I will look more into Barcelona..I don't know much about the city, and maybe I will find things that make up for just having one day in Rome.

  • I would spend those days in Barcelona and save Rome for your next trip.  I've never been to Barcelona (dying to go!) but I've heard it's amazing, and you don't want to overdo the flying back and forth when you're limited to one week.
  • If you only get a one week vacation, then I wouldn't waste three to traveling.

Also, how is the flight only $34? Is it Ryan Air? Read reviews before you book it, because my friends in Europe have Ryan Air horror stories and happily pay more for more consistent flights.

  • RCI has a 6 night cruise that statrts in Rome and ends in Barcelona on Oct 28. It starts at only $449 a person.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy; Livorno (Florence/Pisa), Italy; Genoa, Italy; Villefranche (Nice), France; Provence (Toulon), France; Barcelona, Spain

Or this 6 night starting in Geona and ending in Rome. Sept 9

Genoa, Italy; Ajaccio, Corsica; Barcelona, Spain; Palma De Mallorca, Spain; Valencia, Spain; Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

Or if you'd rather see some of Greece this starts in Messina and ends in Rome. Oct 22

Messina (Sicily), Italy; Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey; Piraeus (Athens), Greece; Chania (Souda), Crete, Greece; Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

  • How long is the flight?
  • I would either look some more for a cruise that departs from Rome or just spend the time in Barcelona. Barcelona is first on my list as a place I'd like to visit soon - I've heard fantastic things about the city and everyone I know who has been really loved it.

  • Barcelona is a great city and there are tons of things to see. Plus, the port is in the city and it is easy to get there.

If the boat leaves from Rome, it is more difficult to get there. It will be really expensive to take a taxi there but they probably have a shuttle that takes you there but it is pretty far away from the center of Rome.

it's actually very easy. you can take a train from termini (center of rome) to civitavecchia (only 1 hour and about 4 euro each-i did it) or take a shuttle from the cruise line but usually they leave from the airport.

for the port in barcelona, it's cab ride doable. maybe a 10 minute ride.

  • We did a 7 day cruise out of Barcelona; Barcelona is cool but it can't compare to Rome.  I wish we did 3 days there instead of Barcelona.  We loved Rome, we wanted to stay longer than a day.

Btw I recommend Rome in Limo private excursions instead of cruiseline ones.
