Re: weighty wednesday- for many girls slimming down doesnt help self esteem

  • what?  you say self-esteem is more complicated than fitting a predetermined mold of attractiveness?

    well, i never.

    kiss it, nest.
  • Welfare Wednesday.  No more than 1 day a week devoted to fat.  My self-esteem can't take it.
  • No this can't be right. I'm positive making teens feel horrible about themselves is the best way to improve their health.

  • It's sad but not a surprise to me.  I haven't been what anyone would describe as even chubby since I was about 12 and I still have extensive food/body image issues stemming from being bigger at a very young age.  I've found that running (as a sport vs. exercise) has helped a lot - it forces me to at least on a rational level to look at food as fuel - but the emotional ickiness comes back and rears its ugly head at the hint of new stress or anxiety.  It's like some weird default in my brain.  And I'm 33 - no wonder young girls can't get past it if we can't as grown women.
