needing a little help please...

I am wanting to make this onesie,

 https://skirtastop.wordpress.com/2011/09/25/a-gender-neutral-baby-gift/

I have found a few similar appliques, but not quite what I am looking for. Can you maybe buy fabric and maybe some kind of adhesive to get the same applique look? I found an adorable dark cloud with a smiley and lightning bolt, which would be cute too, since my husband is a storm nerd, but I  would also want something a little cheerier...

TIA! :)

Re: needing a little help please...

  • You could try two different things:

    1. Buy heat and bond and grey quilting fabric.  Use your iron to fuse a square of heat and bond to the fabric.  Cut out the cloud shapes.  Peel off the paper backing.  Iron the applique to the onesie.

    2. Buy acrylic craft paint and textile medium (available near the craft paint).  Mix them together according to the ration on the textile medium.  Cut the negative cloud shapes out of freezer paper.  Your are basically making a stencil to paint inside of.  Iron the freezer paper onto the onesie.  Use a foam brush to paint the cloud onto the onesie.  Make sure to put some paper inside the onesie while you do this so it doesn't go through.

You could also screen print it.  But buying a silk screen for one project is expensive.

    Good luck!!

  • I can't see the pictures. If someone can load them to Tinypic and post them, I can try to help. (I think work blocked them.)

Or, I can remember (try to anyways lol) to respond tonight.

  • I tried posting pictures, but it wont work for me for some reason... Ive done it before, so I'm not sure whats happened. Its a little white onesie, with applique clouds, its absolutely darling! .
  • Without seeing it, what I do for appliques is get some Heat & Bond (lite if you plan on sewing it, the other if you're not) and iron that to some cotton, then cut out the shape I want -- I draw it on the computer using Illustrator first, then print and pin to the front of the fabric/H&B, but you can either freehand right onto the back of your H&B (remember to mirror image!) or find a coloring page outline of the design you want -- then iron onto the onesie, sew and voila!

The Heat & Bond Lite is not permanent, so you'll have to sew it but the other stuff is. If you're sewing, make sure you don't stretch the onesie too much or it'll kind of get wonky.

Here's one I made (for DS' birthday trip to the Royals last year):

  • Oh thanks so much for getting the photo up! :)

I am so grateful for the suggestions, and I will be trying them out! I will post pictures when I get done.

I have posted a bit here before, but things have been crazy hectic, and I havent been able to come around in a couple of months. I'm glad you ladies still gave me some help! thanks so much!

  • Just get some Heat-n-bond lite (or other similar sewable product).  Iron on a piece the fabric, draw your design, cut out and fuse to the onsie.  Topstitch around to secure and make it look that much better :)  You can skip the topstitching step if you use Heat-n-bond ultra (non sewable)--but I think it looks 10000x better with topstitching :)
