semi-weight related - dress style most flattering for a big bust?

Or what style would you wear if you have a big bust?

I am in the market for a dress for my BIL's wedding at the end of the month and am having a hard time finding something I think I would like and would be flattering on my bust.

Re: semi-weight related - dress style most flattering for a big bust?

  • It depends on your body type, too.

I like to wear strapless dresses with a corset under, and a bolero to cover my shoulders. When I do that I look for a sweet-heart neckline. Even if I choose a style with straps I tend to steer clear of a straight across neckline because it can make me look matronly.

I also avoid empire waists because the band tends to ride up and divide my boobs in half, and also makes me looks pregnant. I look for something a little fitted down through my hips and then flares out a little, so my waist looks longer and balanced with my big chest.

  • LOL!  I bet that will look really nice on me!

  • My boobs aren't huge but my BFing boobs are definitely big.

That said I like scoop neck or sweetheart necklines.  I would say it depends on the rest of your body shape but I think I loo best in something that has a band/accentuates my waist with an a-line type skirt.

I tend to avoid v necks (too much cleavage) and button ups because they always gap between the buttons.

  • I stick mostly to v neck dresses, something with a dip I guess to break up the sisters along with a defined waist. I think the combination of those features keep me from looking like frumpy or bigger than I am.

I think that's a good point.  I've been looking for something that will lengthen my torso and give me more of a waist.  I'm tall (5'10") with a super short torso.  I carry all of my weight in my midsection, and I have really small hips/butt.  So it seems like some things that would typically work for a bigger bust don't work for me b/c my waist is such a problem too.  I feel like a lot of things just make me look huge b/c there's no way to flatter my shape.  Grrr.

I've seen some dresses that would work, but they are mostly bridesmaid's dresses which I don't want - I want something more party guest/casual.

This is what Stacy and Clinton would recommend.

  • This is why I rarely wear dresses.

Thicker shoulder straps and deep V-neck are what I look for.  I need the shoulder straps to be devoid of things like cap sleeves, poofy things, frilly little shoulder details, etc.  All those things are horrible on me.  Rouching on the top of the strap can sometimes be bad, but not always.

Also horrible are a lot of the necklines on wrap dresses and shirt dresses.  So even if there's a V, if that V comes with a shawl collar or some other large collar type detail or ruffles around the V, it's a hot mess.

Square and scoop necks are hit or miss and I need to try them on.  Same goes with empire waists and other under-boob seaming because you never know when that seam is going to hit too high.

    Dolman sleeves are a disaster.

So if you are wondering if any of the dresses on the eshakti site that momi posted will be flattering on you, the answer is not many.

It is amazing how difficult it is to find a dress cut like this, so I feel your pain.

  • HABs got the right idea.  I tend to order clothes online, so that style makes me nervous without trying it on first.  But, it is the most flattering look.

  • wrap dress (with a cami under if need be).  this is my favorite kind of dress and i recommend it for almost everything.  ha.

V neck with elbow or 3/4 sleeves (less flesh revealed up top--including arms--means less of an overall visual impression that you're "exposed" imo.)

a nice boatneck, if it's not too high up over the clavicle.

nothing empire waist, strapless, spaghetti strapped, or crew necked.

    kiss it, nest.
  • I'm flat chested but I tend to wear dresses like HAB posted because I have really broad shoulders.
  • Thanks, everyone!

and lol @  Old Navy.  Good call, hahaha.

I think I might order a couple dresses and then have the crap tailored out of one of them.  My real issue is that I have to buy for my bust and torso, but then it tends to swallow my bottom half and it makes me feel really unattractive.

  • Team HAB. I like flattering, non-plunging V necks. Scoops make my boobs look even bigger and make my chest seem... wide.

  • In addition to neckline, you'll need to consider the fabric too.

I like jersey knits best, as they have a bit of stretch for the bust. That way I can usually buy my true size. Otherwise I have to buy big for the boobs and tailor down the waist area.

  • I have big boobs but a different body otherwise.

I vote just find a dress in the most flattering color you can and call it good. I have two fairly poorly cut red sweaters with orange undertones, and evidently that is my color because they are the only thing I wear that people compliment me on.

  • Your BIL should reschedule his wedding until after your surgery.  HTH.

I'm going to suggest this b/c it would look atrocious on my flat chest, so maybe it will work for you.

  • How do you get your boobs to fit in a dress with an empire waist? I can't to save my damn life.

Cville, I have no waist so booo on your wrap dress suggestion Crying I do like your Boat-neck idea though.

  • I actually think strapless is flattering (at least on me), provided it's a little structured and I have a good foundation garment.

V-necks, even ones that are supposed to be modest, gape and make me look like a porn star.

Years later, I am still embarrassed about how I looked in a bridesmaid dress for a friend's wedding, even after the seamstress took up the straps and closed the v a couple inches higher than where it was supposed to cross.  My cleavage was not church appropriate.
