Ants near by sink, yuck!

I have google searched and asked some friends but what do you girls think? I have ants near my kitchen sink.  They appeared a week or two ago when DH opened teh window above the sink one night.  There are usually only 2-6 at a time but I think they are gross.  I keep killing them and of course they keep coming back.  I put some vinegar out where I thought they were coming in.  Anybody have any other ideas? I would rather not use harsh chemicals near the sink and countertops.  People have recommended Terro..I could put that outside.  TIA!

Re: Ants near by sink, yuck!

  • have you tried those little ant traps...and maybe put one outside your window? we get them sometimes in our mud room and those seem to work
  • Sprinkle cinnamon across where they are coming in. Sugar ants don't like the smell and won't cross it. Also, borax is safe but will kill them. Otherwise, terro rocks. None of the easy solutions worked for our ant infestation....and it was a ton of ants....and terro took care of them.and they were carpenter ants...wasn't even supposed to kill those!

  • Terro is awesome!!  Terro makes little liquit ant baits, too.   We had a few ants here and there,  and haven't seen any since I put terro in the rooms we saw them in!

  • Yuck-we battle this every spring and summer at my house and those little ants drive me bonkers!

DH sprays insect spray around the foundation of the house and that seems to help.  Not 100% sure on the brand but you can get it at Lowe's or Home Depot.

I also put those little ant traps on the counters, I just bought the "Amdro" brand and they seem to help a little bit.  I don't like having them on the counters because of the chemicals but these ants are out of control.

And of course keeping any sort of crumbs/food off the counter and keeping the dishes done is the biggest thing that I've found that helps.  I'm bad about leaving dishes in the sink so I have really been trying to keep all the dishes done and wiping down the counters a few times a day.

  • Thanks for the recommendations. I have been keeping all the dishes off the counter and out of the sink....putting them in the dishwasher right away.  Last night there were two ants in my dishwasher....yuck! I have told DH I am trying to do this but he still leaves dishes on the counter and in the sink. The vinegar has helped a little and I am going to get something to spray outside.
  • TERRO! We have battled ants for 3 years now. We tried Terro sprinkle stuff and liquid stuff this year. The sprinkle stuff has worked, I definitely recommend it. You can sprinkle it inside & outside.
