Totes Garden Related -

How large is your back yard garden space? I'm heading up the community garden project at my church and was trying to get some ideas for the space.

My pastor is all, we can dig up the soil and I'm like "Shhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttttttttttttttt. Too much work. Raised beds are the way to go." The area in question is already fenced off, so it'll be easy to keep critters out of it. I don't have the dimensions of the area yet, but it's got to be at least a 30x40 ft plot.

You know I just have 3 3x3 beds at my house, so you know I need tips for a large garden space! LOL

  • We have 3 5x25' raised beds.  So, 375 square feet.  For crop rotation purposes, I treat them like they're actually 6 5x13' beds.  This gives me 6 years for rotating plants around before they go back to the same plot.

My biggest complaint with them is they're only 2 feet apart, which makes kneeling for harvesting, weeding, etc. a real pain in the arse.  I wish they were 3 feet apart at least. *sigh*

Now and then my H and I talk about adding either a 4th raised bed OR doing a bunch of perennial plants (asparagus, raspberry bushes, etc.).  I don't think (?) you can do those in raised beds but I haven't looked too much at it.

The end goal is to use our community garden to help supplement the church food pantry. I don't know if we'd plant raspbeerry and blueberry bushes. But I can totally see - cukes, tomatoes, greens, okra, squash, green beans, and melons going in the garden.

For the amount of space we have, would you suggest raised beds or in ground?

Well, raised beds are always going to take up more space because you need more space between rows for kneeling, etc..  So that's the downside,

But if you did, say, six 6x15' beds, that's 540 sq ft. Not half bad.
