Dear Dr RE

So a few years ago, I had some X-rays done on my hand/wrist because I was having some pain.  They didn't see anything on the X-rays, the pain seemed to go away, so I didn't follow up with the other tests.

Fast forward to 2012.  The pain is back and seems to be worse.  The only doctor I have a real history with is my OB/GYN and feel weird calling her up to tell her "uh, my hand hurts...".

Do I start with her to see if she has a referral or do I suck it up, call and wait to get in with a GP and go from there?  I've been dealing with the pain for the past few weeks because this shiit drives me batty and I HATE seeing new doctors.

Re: Dear Dr RE

  • Is there any history of injury?  Do you do lots of computer work?  Have you had tendonitis?

My shoulders and elbows were all wonky and I saw a chiropractor (a bone one, not a fix your chi and IBS one) and it's far better.

  • No history of injury, but I'm on the computer pretty much all day, five days a week.

  • If you poke and rub an inch below your elbow with your thumb (fairly hard) smooshing the muscles back and forth, does it hurt like a mofo?
  • Lolz.  Don't you dare call your OB about your hand.  Find a GP.

Not really, but maybe I'm not doing it right?  (That's what she said.)

The pain is mainly centered at the base of my thumb and in between my thumb and pointer finger.  If you press on that area it hurts like a mofo, but also feels "good" in a weird way, if that makes any sense.

  • GP. Unless you don't need referrals, then go see sports med. Did they do an MRI or just xrays? See if someone will send you to OT/PT if there's "nothing" there.
    I'm fabulous.
  • I would go right to an orthopedist.
  • I've had the same pain in my hand before. It clears up for awhile and then returns. A hand brace helped me out immensely.

No referrals needed for my insurance.  They just did xrays last time.  God I hate this stuff.

  • Sports med or ortho then. Then to therapy!

The OT I saw for my hand had this nifty thing that you stuck your hand in, like a box, and then she turned it on and it rumbled/blew warm sand around your hand.

    I'm fabulous.

Me too. That's where you'll ultimately get sent anyways.

  • I had a similar problem and was referred to an orthopedic... a cortizone injection was magic for me... over a year and no pain.  If you don't need a referral, go straight there.

  • In addition to the GP, can your job provide you with an ergonomic evaluation? I had similar pain in my thumb, had an eval done and was given a new mouse that has worked wonders for the pain moreso than the stupid anti-inflamatories that the doctor gave me.

  • I think if you tell your OB that you're having pain in your hand and you think it's due to chronic masturbatory delight, and that you'd like her to check out your Ma'am Cave and make sure you didn't flick something that you shouldn't have, and oh yeah, while you're there, could she take a look at your hand or recommend someone who could, it would all seem very legitimate and you'd be set.
