Coming home from an overseas location.

HI, I'm not a reg on this board but I thought I'd ask some of you MN ladies.

My BIL is full time Army, right now they are stationed in Germany. BIL should be going for his 5th tour in May?

Anyway, we're trying to get my sister to come home for the month of June. but airline tickets are crazy expensive for her and my youngest nephew to come back. (the oldest nephew's is paid for by his dad)

Do any of you have any tips on how they can come home w/o us spending a ton of money on tickets? Is this a pipe dream? I haven't seen them since last summer.

  • Have her look into Space-Available travel from her base.

It _might_ be possible to get an inexpensive flight back to the US.  But, dependents are pretty low on the pecking order for seats on these flights, and there are other issues that might come of using space-a if she has a specific time-frame she needs to meet.

  • Ditto Space A.  Like PP said, she needs to be able to be flexible with her travel times, though.  Dependents are low priorty and can get bumped if a service member needs that seat.  However, it is a great way to travel at inexpensively.

  • Great, thank you! I'll make sure she checks into that!
  • His deployment status should help bump their priority tho.

not necessarily. It depends on where she is and length of assignment. You might get bumped to a 4, but that's not a guarantee.

Overseas wife here.  I believe the only way for her to get bumped to a 4 is if she is traveling on EML (emergency morale leave).  Overseas folks are qualified for EML once every 6 months.  And EML is not dependent on whether or not her husband is deployed.  She will need a letter from her husband's command for EML though.  It isn't hard to get that letter, but it's just one more step she'll have to go through.  If she's at a large base with lots of planes coming and going, then she'll have an easier chance of getting to the States.  Also, getting Stateside usually isn't the problem.  It's the coming back to OCONUS that usually takes a lot longer than expected.  Just have her be prepared for this being a long process.  If it goes smoothly, then she can be pleasantly surprised.  But if it takes her 4 weeks (yes, it can take that long!) and a lot of hours sitting at the terminal with her kids (because you have to arrive REALLY REALLY early to put your name on the list for a Space A flight and then you have to wait ALL DAY LONG and cannot leave the terminal because if they call your name to tell you that you have a seat, and you've gone to get lunch or something - well they won't wait for you to come back; they'll give that seat to the next person in line).  Basically, I avoid Space A because I have kids - sitting at a terminal from 2 AM to 6 PM with my two children only to be told I didn't get on the flight and get to go through the same process tomorrow just isn't my cup of tea.  Space A sounds really nice on the surface - free flights anywhere in the world! - but for me, the possible headache isn't worth it.
