Vegas- please don't judge, The Orleans??

We are arranging this last minute trip around DH's travel to AZ for work. Amongst many previous hotel ideas, this latest one he suggested was The Orleans. I know nothing about it other then that I know its off the strip. But I know there is a shuttle that will take you to/from the Strip. The only problem I see w/that is that the shuttle only runs from 9-1230am...which could be a problem if we're wandering around the strip a little tipsy & lose track of time & are forced to walk back the rest of the way....

Thoughts?

  • I don't know anything about the Orleans either.  But you can always take a cab back to the hotel if you're out past when the shuttle runs.  No need to walk. :-)

  • It's been a few years, but I stayed at the Orleans for a week in 2005 for my college senior year spring break, and had a great time there. The room was nice, casino was a lot of fun, nice pool, etc. If you need to get back after the shuttle is done, just take a cab - very worth it to stay out as late as you want. I liked staying right off the strip because the prices were cheaper, but the hotel was still nice.

  • Thank you ladies! I was cringing clicking "post" after I typed this for fear of what people would say about this!!!

Im just trying to be rational about where to stay, b/c you seriously spend like no time in your room, so whats the point in breaking the bank on a place to sleep. Just as long as its clean!

  • I know some people don't like staying in places like TO because it isn't "fancy" like most hotels on the strip, but I freaking love TO for that reason. It's so laid back. I've won at the slots there, the pool is nice, rooms are decent and to top it all, it won't break the bank like you said. I guess if you are out past 1230, just take a cab? It won't be that long of a ride from the strip.

Eta: oops I guess PPs pretty much said the same. Now I miss Vegas, TO was where my family and I would hang out on weekends to gamble.

  • We stayed there a couple of years ago and it was decent. The room was nicer than I expected. I would stay there again!

The Orleans is fine, but I'm surprised you can't get a similar rate on something with a better location.  Are you going mid-week?  Have you considered priceline "name your own price"?

I will caution you that IMO, walking from the strip to The Orleans at night is NOT an option.  Not only does everything look much closer than it is (you are looking at a 30+ minute walk), but this is not the best part of town to be walking in that late.  If you think you will be out later than 12:30 I'd look into the bus or a taxi, but if you are getting taxis you won't really see a big savings by staying at TO versus a cheaper strip hotel anyway.

I was gonna say the same thing... check out hotels.com or expedia or one of those sites. They always have deals for hotels on the strip. you can get good deals, because the hotels want you to spend more money in the casinos :-) also... if you are planning to be out past 12:30 pretty much every night, you'll be spending a lot of money on cabs, so it might end up not being a savings anyway... we've stayed at MGM Grand- got a good deal, and decent hotel right on the strip.

  • look at Ballys, Harrahs, Flamingo or Bills for decent budget properties in great locations.  Like everyone else said, you are going to spend your savings in cabs to the strip.

  • I've stayed at the Orleans before and liked it just fine.  It was clean, the service was decent, and the smaller size gave it a kind of mellow feel.

As PPs have said, however, you should plan to grab a cab/bus if you're out after the shuttle stops.

  • I don't know what you're paying for The Orleans, but I was actually just looking into Vegas hotels for a possible upcoming trip, and I was able to find some really good deals on Strip hotels, like some for less than a $100/night. I would check out Hotwire, Travelocity, Priceline, etc. and see if you can find something in a more convenient location. The Flamingo comes to mind as a "cheaper" Strip hotel. We stayed there in 2008 and had a fine experience there. Plus the pool area is cool and it's right in the middle of the Strip. Since it sounds like you will be spending all your time on the Strip, you might as well stay there. You'd be paying a lot for cabs otherwise.

  • I will admit, I cringed when I saw the title of this post. But then I went on trip advisor and the reviews are actually pretty decent. Have fun!

  • I stayed there several years ago with my parents when we embarked on our Grand Circle trip. We loved it. The hotel rooms were nice and the pool area was great. We had no trouble taking the shuttle. And they had pretty good food too.

  • I LOVE the Orleans.  I think it's the perfect cheap place to stay in Vegas, and I'm pretty picky about hotels.  It's clean and comfortable, has a decent pool, a decent breakfast buffet (we did not like the dinner buffet), and is an incredible value (at least when we were there).  We paid something crazy like $27 a night, but that may have been through Priceline - I can't remember.  Even for up to $60 a night it's a great deal, but if you are willing to pay more than that, you can usually Priceline something on the strip for $100 and get a nice hotel (of course this does all vary by time of year).

You absolutely do not want to walk back to the Orleans from the strip at night, but taking a cab would be easy.
