Another Game of Thrones question (from A Dance with Dragons)

I didn't want to put this in the last thread because I don't want to spoil anything. Many of the people in there are still on book one, two, three or four.

Anyone else catch the implication that Cersei and Jamie are actually Aerys kids? Making Tyrion Tywin's only true heir, making Jamie a patricidal kinslayer like Tyrion, and making all of "Robert's" kiddies with Cersei actually just the latest in a long line of incestuous Targaryn bastards?

I think GRR Martin throws a ton of stuff out there just to mess with us but isn't going to resolve it. Ever. Book 20 will be out, everyone we know will be dead, the wars continuing, and none of this will get answered. We'll be hearing about Brienne's bastard child fishing off the Dorne coast with a friendly wight or some such nonsense.

  • I don't remember this at all.  Which chapter was it in?

  • It's a throw away line midway through. Someone talks about Tywin being mad at Aerys for wanting to reinstate king's first night rights and "taking liberties" with his wife during the bedding at their wedding.  It would explain why he appointed Jaime to the Kingsguard rather than let him become heir to Casterly Rock.
  • The only flaw with the theory that Jaime and Cersei were Aerys children is that Jaime wasn't appointed to be in the Kingsguard.  He volunteered for it so that he could be close to Cersei in Kings Landing.

  • This theory is pretty bunk. The targaryens had silver hair and purple eyes. Lannisters, like cersei and Jamie, have golden hair and green eyes. I'd like to see the evidence as to where this theory comes from...

And this, Jamie chose to be a kingsguard.

  • And why would Tywin try to marry Cersei to prince Rhaegar? Tywin took the fact that Aerys chose Elia instead of Cersei as a huge slight.

Joanna was a Lannister by birth, not just marriage, so the kids would still have Lannister blood. It was a throw away line (as I mentioned previously). I think he plants a number of these things just to mess with us. Something to make you say "wait a minute" and then it never comes back again. I'd forgotten Jaime volunteered.
  • Hmm. I see what you mean but they're described as looking very similarly to Twin physically and didn't Jamie volunteer to be in the kingsguard to be near Cersei?
