Have you ever...

...gone to visit a home for sale and disliked the front appearance just enough to disregard the rest of the home and not pay attention to it only to find out later on that DH liked it and then feel guilty that you might not have given the property a fair looking?

This happened to me yesterday. We went back today for a second showing and I promised to pay attention and give it a fair shot.

So, have you ever not initially liked a home only to visit again and discover that it is actually a really great place?

Re: Have you ever...

  • Yes, the first house we were under contract for. I hated it, but H liked it so I gave it a second chance. I convinced myself that it was okay and we went under contract. Then I decided I really did hate it and we walked away (we only had a $500 deposit).

There was another house that was a good house, but I had seen another one right before that was like the Taj Mahal, so I was comparing the houses but not the price tags. By the time it occurred to me to go back it was under contract.

It can go either way, but make sure you love it. If there's a nagging feeling in the back of your head that you're settling, I would take more time to think it over.

  • Yup the house we just bought!  We went for a first showing while the owners still lived there, the house on first imprssion just seemed "dingy" and dark.  They dropped the price, and the house is in our #1 ideal location so we went back and looked again, this time without the owners stuff there.  I realized I thought it was "dingy" because the paint is off (light walls dark trim) and the lighting fixtures are terrible.  All fixable things.

So yeah neither one of us were excited about the house at first, but looking at it with fresh eyes we both realized it had a lot of potential and was good for us.

I thought our house was hella ugly when DH showed me online the first time and didn't even want to go see the model.

DH talked me into it, I loved it the second we walked in. The floor plan is fantastic. Appearances can be deceiving.

  • Curb appeal is a deal breaker for me.  Unless I've got money in the budget to hire an architect to redo the front, I don't care how great the floorplan is.
  • Kind of the opposite here- I found the house I LOVED while it took my FI a while to warm up to the house. It was a huge mess inside, the sellers had 5 children and it was just filthy. I immediately demanded to get the house, I could see the potential, everything was easily fixable, mostly paint jobs.

He loves it now!! At least that's what he says :)
