s/o talking to kids about race: The under 2 set.

I saw this asked in the original thread, so I know I'm not the only one with the question.

So Natalie knows her colors, and her favorite game seems to be announcing colors loudly to me.  We were returning some stuff at Target, and she was pointing out the colors.  She looks at the Target sign and says "red."  I answer as I always do, yep, red, that's right.  She points out a few more colors, and I answered her in the same fashion.  Then she points at the guest services girl, and says "black."  I said "uh huh," and started looking for a hole to climb into.  She says it again and I said "that's right" without repeating the color.  She said it like 2 more times, and the girl behind the counter looked very annoyed.

So how should I have handled that?  I can't really explain to Natalie, because she was probably talking about her hair, but I felt like saying "yep, that's right, her hair is black," would've sounded like I was making up excuses to ignore her skin color.  But I didn't know how to acknowledge it/explain to the employee.

Does that make sense at all?

  • Does she watch Dora?

I would have continued to say, Yes, you're right, just like Dora is brown, mommy is pink/tan, we all come in different colors. What color is Elmo? Big Bird? etc. etc.

Even if she didn't watch Dora, I'd still say it. Chances are the clerk knows who Dora is, and that could diffuse the awkwardness.

  • Ditto pp. I would not ignore it, I would have said what's black? The sales clerk's hair is black but her skin is brown. Because I am sure she was not talking about her skin as black people aren't black in crayola crayon land which is how I am sure she knows color.

This is what I was thinking.

  • Thanks, y'all.  I hated that my own awkwardness made it an uncomfortable situation.  I love both suggestions, and will now have a better way to handle such situations in the future.
