Does anybody use a food scale?

I'm doing a challenge at crossfit and part of it is to log my food. We've got some crazy sized strawberries among other fruit and I'm not sure how much a serving would be. My coach recommended a food scale.

Is there anything I should look out to get and what not to look for?

  • I use a digital scale. I have the option of weighing in grams or ounces and I'd highly recommend getting one with the Tare feature, perfect when you are adding multiple items to one bowl and want to weigh them out each individually.

  • Pretty much everything Mominator said, plus I'll add that if you're weighing things like dry beans, rice, flour, etc, a bowl attachment to the scale is pretty handy too :)

  • I have a measuring cup with a built-in scale. Taylor makes it.

  • I have a digital one, with grams and ounces. So eye opening!

Exactly this. Mine is made by Taylor and was under $25.

  • I got my food scale at TJ Maxx for ~$20. It's a Cuisinart scale, and I love it because it is orange! It has ounces, pounds and ounces, and grams, and it also has a tare feature. I weigh almost everything I eat, and I almost always weigh in grams, as I think that is the most exact you can get for the most part!

  • Yes!  It makes your realize how much you can deceive yourself by eyeballing things!

Ditto. I think I got it at Bed Bath & Beyond. If you are weighing bigger items (large bowls, etc.), you may want to look into one that has a pull-out option so you can see the readout without pulling a muscle or jumping into a yoga pose.

  • I have a digital one I got at BB&B I think, that I always use.

  •  I had a basic one from target. I think I was around $20. Honestly, the food scale was probably one of the most important tools for my fat loss a few years ago.
