s/o splitting checks

I want to know who the people are that go out to eat, get something that is clearly more expensive than what others get, but either suggest or just go along with "yeah, let's split the check evenly!!"??

I've been out to lunch where we all get basically the same meal, but I get a soda and they get water.  I always at least try to pay my share.  Or say that I'll cover the tip.  And I'm talking about "just" a $2 soda - I am always ready to pay for whatever I consume.

Who are the people who order entree's that are $5, $10, $15 more expensive and willingly don't pony up for it???

Re: s/o splitting checks

  • I was like to know what kind of moron suggests they split the check evenly no matter what.

  • It reminds me of the Friends episode where Rachel, Joey, and Pheobe were p!ssed because Monica, Chandler, and Ross wanted to split a check evenly at an expensive resturant.

The only time I have ever split a check was when we took a friend out to dinner for their birthday. It was all agreed on before the dinner that the check would be split evenly to cover the friend's cost of dinner.

I agree with this.  I was the outlier today in that my meal was the most drasticlly inexpensive.

I had an old coworker who always ordered a full dinner entree for lunch while everyone else was getting something about $10 less and HE was always the one to suggest the even split, "To keep the math easy."  Same with the people who order an appetizer and then insist it should be split because, "I didn't eat all of it, these two had some too."

ETA: We didn't let that coworker get away with it.  We were on a travel assignment and eating out every day.  Dude was trying to sap off of our per diems.

  • we have never split the check with anyone, you each pay for your meal. I couldnt be friends with people like that, is that bad?

OMG - I seriously can't believe people do this!!!  But, I guess since it's for work, he figures it doesn't matter. But still.... uncool.

And if I order an app, even to share, I plan to pay for it myself.  If the others who ate offer to throw in a couple bucks, cool.  but I never expect it.

  • Out to dinner with our core group of friends we almost always just split the check - we always share apps and desserts, sometimes we share entrees, eat off each other's plates, each couple has about the same number of drinks, etc. Plus, there's not a huge difference b/w $95 and $110, you know? Typically if we know for sure that one couple's bill would have been higher, they make it up in the tip.

If it's just us and one other couple or people we don't hang out with often then we ask for separate checks.

I split checks with people as long as all of us are drinking or none of us are drinking.  There is one friend and one couple that we pretty much always split checks with (or take turns paying the bill- it all evens out in the end).

I would not let someone split the check down the middle if they had water and I had two glasses of sangria.

  • I always just prefer to pay my share.  I'm not paying for my co-workers grilled shrimp and steak combo w/rice when I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and fries.

I'm a *** when it comes to stuff like that.

  • With friends who I go out w/ on a regular basis, we're all much more relaxed about it because we know that in the end, it will all come out in the wash.  I may pay more than I owe one time, but the next time, it may fall on someone else.

it's people who you hardly go out with, or aren't really friends with, that some of this stuns me that people do this crap!

This.  It usually evens out in the end.

We're in the weird position where a casual friend insisted on picking up the entire check for a group we were out with and said it would come back around (basically someone else will get it next time).  I'm still not sure how to handle that.  Are we supposed to buy everyone dinner next time or just him and his wife?

I would personally pay for him and his wife.

We have a couple we're friends with that does this when given the opportunity and then they will complain about being over budget monthly.  It's super awkward.  We also talked about it and decided we didn't want the precedent to be set that one couple pays for everyone, because none of us have that kind of money to be throwing around.  We paid them back once and now just try to make sure the server gets the "separate checks please" message.

    Same here.

If someone had a habit of being assy/abusing the privilege, it'd stop, though.
