FBR: WDYD when someone breaks out Godwin's Law?

My cousin went kinda nuts just now on FB. Mer can attest. It went really sideways fast. She's like that, though. The cousin, not MerE. Stick out tongue

So when someone goes all "and then you bought a NAZI MADE CAR!" (ahem, my DH drives a MINI Cooper.... Hmm) I responded with "uhhhhhh... holy inappropriate Godwin's Law argument there, Batman."

I just called her out on it, but WDYD when someone jumps the crazy barrier into crazyland?

  • I thought mini Cooper's are BMW...everyone knows the Nazis made Mercedes

  • Explain they just lost the argument.
  • You can't win with people like that. My current response of choice is to start posting non sequiturs. If someone says that I'm not making sense or am OT, my response is that I thought that was the new theme based upon Crazycakes' last post.

My standard FB response to someone invoking Godwin's Law is "Thank you and goodnight."

  • Mini's were originally a British designed car, introduced in the UK in 1959.  The brand was sold to BMW in the early 2000s.  While BMW like many German corporations used slave labor during WWII and certainly benefited from the work of unfortunate victims of the Nazis, the company today doesn't use such labor.  And since the brand Mini was acquired well after the Second World War calling a Mini Cooper a Nazi car is misinformed and ignorant of the brand's history.

Yes, the Volkwagen was Hitler's idea. "People's car." A cheaper, German-made car for the masses.

BMW, and I assume Mercedes, made tanks and planes and whatnot during the war. And, well, GM and Ford did the same, they just happened to be on the winning, non-Jew-killing side.

But seriously? I've joked around with people about driving a Nazi car, but I can't imagine anyone out there is whacko enough to actually boycott a company 70+ years after the fact because they were conscripted into working on something for their own government, who happened to have bad intentions.

But, as Sarah Silverman says, "Jewish people driving German cars... What the hell is up with that..."

And yet, I'm sure Ford wasn't that upset by the Holocaust. Wasn't he a raving anti-semite?

DON'T BUY FORDS!!! Antisemitic germs are catching.

ah, so. Not only is she completely misinformed (we knew MINI's were British originally, and now owned by BMW - if you flip it over, EVERY part is stamped BMW), I am the one who drives a VW!!! Surprise FWIW, she drives a Honda... so the Japanese are cool because they surrendered in WWII???  DH wanted to point out his last car was a Mitsubishi, but its not like he got a license plate that said "Zero" on it. Confused

All of the Jews I know (and they're all old as fcuk, so it may be a generational thing) won't drive Fords because Ford was an anti-Semite.
