XP from TB: TMO vs DITY

What is your preference and why? We are leaning towards DITY mostly because Im all set with people going through my stuff and Im totally type A and I want to know where everything is. My husband has been in 9 years and this is my first PCS believe it or not. We will be going from Mass to South Carolina. The plan was to hire movers to load everything in a tractor trailer then hire movers down there to unload. We will be driving down with a UHaul full of essential stuff and the babys room. Is this overkill? Should we just have them move us? What has been your experience?

  • Um. Yes. You should just let them hire the movers. I don't see the difference in your plan other than you having to hire movers yourself. What you want to do is a partial DITY. Let them take the big stuff and you can move the stuff you want or need right away. It's the best of both worlds.

    Ditto.

So basically you just don't want people packing your stuff for you?  I say just deal with it and do a TMO move.

  • Let them pack for you and then do a small PPM for what can fit in your vehicles. For our last move about a month ago, the movers labeled the boxes really well so unpacking was quick and easy.

  • We (I say "we" but I actually did it on my own) *just* PCS'd and it went incredibly smooth. They did an awesome job packing, labeling, loading and unpacking/unloading. Just make your presence known and check in on them often. It will help them stay focused and let them know you expect them to take care of your belongings. If you don't like they way they are doing something, politely let them know.

Be organized and take what you need with you.

Meh. It's not like they sort your underwear for you. Well, I did find some plastic shelf brackets in my underwear drawer afterward but I also keep my clothes in stackable plastic drawers because I don't own a regular dresser.

They label boxes as to what's in them. I mean, kind of. If you keep tupperware in your bedroom (we had a tiny kitchen!) they're still going to label it "bedroom" because they're trying to be accurate about where they found it.

Plus you can be there the whole time watching them. Our first move they actually let us be very involved with filling out the manifest or whatever it was called so you can still have a certain amount of control.

Like others said, I personally prefer a partial-DITY any day for any distance. It's sooo much easier than doing it all myself. It allows me to keep my eye on a few important things that go in my car as well.

Blah blah blah, feel free to check the link in my signature for other info. on moving.

  • We have gone with TMO for each move (four of them, so far).

Honestly, don't fret about them seeing things that might be embarrassing.  They've seen it all, and even when you have things that might be questionable, they're not going to comment or do anything in front of you.  And, heck - you're moving out of the area, so it's not like you will be running into the packers again.

The absolutely critical items come with us in the car (important paperwork, items that could never be replaced, basic kitchen items for once we arrive at the new place, like a cutting board and a couple knives, etc).  But, we keep these to a minimum, because it's a pain to have too much stuff with you.

The packers we have dealt with have always been professional.  There were a few that joked with me about the amount of yarn and fabric we (er, _I_) have, but I welcomed the jokes by starting it myself (we really do have a rediculous amount of fabric and yarn...).

And, yes, we have had a few items damaged during these moves.  But, in the grand scheme of things, the damage was _way_ less than it would have been if we were the ones packing/moving, and we were able to claim damages.

I will never do a dity move, if I have the option of avoiding it.

  • I've never had a choice b/c all of our moves have involved crossing a major body of water.

I do have some issues with how my furniture was treated, but that's a lesson learned to be vigilant next time with how they wrap it.  Or, rather, lesson learned that I should take off work and actually be there instead of letting H handle it.
